"T&K Builders LLC, Terry and his Team were the ultimate professional. What was promised was delivered and more. Terry and his Team explained all the steps being performed. There was no surprise when it came to the invoice. I would hire T&K Builders LLC, Terry and his Team again and again for any of my home improvement projects - large or small."

"I loved making one phone call and having them take care of the rest!! I had my gutters, siding, and roof all replaced hassle free. I was able to pick out what I wanted from the comfort of my home. Each crew came out and finished each job in 1 day! They cleaned up very well. Which was awesome since I have 4 small kids and 2 dogs who live outside! The owners actually came out as the house was being worked on and made sure everything was going as planned!"

"Overall it went well. The only thing I would say is that initially they wanted to use a part from an entire faucet combo (cost about $168) when eventually the part could be purchased seperately for about $40.  But I asked questions and they accommodated by going pick up the part at home depot.  That was very helpful as we were able to get all the work done that day.  Jennifer was great to work with....very responsive and timely follow up.

"Orlando was very responsive to email and phone calls and came out quickly for an estimate. He was very flexible with scheduling the paint job, but we had to delay because of our schedule. We hope to be able to reschedule the job in mid April. We look forward to seeing the quality of the work because the customer service is good.

"My experience was excellent.  Mastercat has been my first choice for mold remediation and bio-hazard clean-up for years.  I have hired them on many projects and I always receive courteous and responsive customer service, competitive quotes, and excellent results.  I have recommended Mastercat many times in the past.  Donny and his team are great to work with and do great work."

"First Choice Construction Group always stands to deliver. Excellent, quality work with an unmatched presence in the marketplace. Aside from the quality work, the service was second to none. These guys are truly connectors in the community, and I would recommend them to anyone that has a need for this type of general contracting/remodeling. Tim Szatko has been an outstanding resource to not only myself, but my clients as well. Tim has always put my needs first as a customer, and helped me tackle a multitude of pain points. I would Highly recommend getting in touch with Tim, as he is truly a relationship builder, who is passionate about having an impact on his clients lives!"

"The end result was a terrific James Hardie siding addition that is the envy of my neighbors. The addition looks like a new addition and I could not be happier with the final result. The storm doors that were installed were beautiful and excellent quality. Mike and his crew were great to work with. They kept in communication about everything. Customer satisfaction is very important to Chicagoland Builders. After the project was done, there was a followup visit to take care of any little details that needed to be addressed. Based on the quality of the work and the price that we paid I would highly recommend Chicagoland Builders."

Custom Home Builders FAQs, answered by experts

Whether it’s more affordable to gut a house than build a new one depends on the markets where you'd be buying and selling. However, it’s usually less expensive to renovate a home than to build new construction.

Most homeowners pay between $100,000 and $200,000 for demolition and remodeling costs, whereas the average cost to build a new home is between $139,000 and $531,300.

While it’s never too early to start planning for a major home improvement project like a home addition, give yourself at least a month or two to plan and design your addition, find a contractor, and get the permits in order. For larger projects like a second-story addition that require designing with an architect, plan on three to four months of preparation.

It usually takes around four to six months to build and install a modular home, although your timeline could go up to around eight months if there are delays in the manufacturing or permitting process. Heavy site preparation and foundation pouring can extend that timeline if you need them, as can customizations you want for your modular home. Your modular home company should be able to provide an estimate for the construction timeline before you sign any contracts or agree to any work.

Above all, the downside to building a new house is a longer timeline. You need several months to finish the build, depending on the supply chain and labor availability in the meantime. Building a home compared to buying one is also more expensive, both in the building process and when it comes to mortgage rates and property taxes.

A green home is one that focuses on conservation, with the goal often being net-zero carbon emissions and self-sustainability. It will often include some kind of self-generation equipment, like solar panels or a small wind turbine, high-efficiency electrical components and mechanicals, and high-quality insulation and air sealing to reduce the loss of conditioned air. Many green homes also include xeriscaping or rainwater collection to cut down on drainage and water consumption.
