"They were WONDERFUL! The upstairs chimney was an easy fix, it just needed the new damper and cleaning and tuckpointing of the inside bricks. They even spray painted them at no extra cost. The downstairs chimney presented a problem as the old flue had unexpected twists and turns and was really old and had not been well-kept (we just bought the place and it's 90+ years old.) However, they stuck to the original estimate price and made the fireplace like new! What is amazing is that although there was a lot of soot, dirt, grout and other messy stuff, they kept everything neat and clean and made sure when they left it was as if they had never been there. The price was a bit higher than other estimates, but I chose them because of other stellar reviews on Angie's List. It proved a great choice. They were timely and efficient and even came a week earlier than the estimated appointment date when they had a cancellation. I am extremely pleased and can't wait until the cold weather to enjoy a clean like-new fireplace. Overall a fantastic job!"

"I had Armando on my place, very professional guy. Did my chimney cleaning. It was never been cleaned since we bought the house. But the guy from GEM gave us an affordable deep cleaning. Very polite and professional. Always recommended for people in Minneapolis to get them for service."

"Rob and his crew did a great job.. outside tuck pointing, crack repair, new damper, holes filled. Inside new mortar, smoke chamber fire proofed, new ceramic logs, silica, gas line. Showed us how to operate the new damper and light the fireplace. Perfect job."

Fireplace Cleaners questions, answered by experts

If you already have the tools, like a miter saw, a stud finder, and a nail gun or hammer, installing shiplap costs $500 to $1,000 for supplies. You’ll also spend $200 to $2,200 for the cost of an electric fireplace if you decide to add one into your setup.

You can also hire a carpenter for $35 to $100 per hour, plus the cost of materials, to install shiplap around your fireplace. If you need help installing a fireplace before adding the shiplap, labor can cost $225 to $2,180 for fireplace installation costs

Regular HVAC filter changes, deep cleaning, and air quality monitoring help maintain a healthy environment.

You should use an angled brush to first paint the mortar lines, then go in with a high-density roller to evenly paint the bricks one at a time. You can also use a flat paintbrush to paint individual bricks, but a roller is faster and easier to use thanks to its longer handle and wider surface area for coating the bricks. To finish, go in with the paint brush for edges or hard-to-reach areas.

Yes, brick should be clean before staining to ensure the best results. Dirt, dust, mold, mildew, and other substances on the brick can prevent the stain from properly adhering to it. Thoroughly cleaning the brick allows the stain to penetrate and bond to the surface more effectively. Cleaning typically involves using a pressure washer or a stiff brush with mild detergent. However, stubborn residue may require a specialized masonry cleaner.

No, you can't apply limewash with a roller and expect good results. Limewash is as much a technique as it is a type of paint, and a freehand application with a brush is part of that technique. Hand brushing a large area can be tiring, but limewash goes on easily and only requires thin coats to be effective.
