Before The Patch Boys, the best available options for repairing dents, cracks, and holes in walls and ceiling were to call your neighborhood handyman, hope a general contractor could make time in between larger jobs, or attempt to do it yourself. All of these options still exist, but they won’t provide nearly the same benefits, quality of results or stress-free experience that a professional drywall company can. Here are some of the key ways The Patch Boys stand out from the others that might tackle drywall and plaster repair jobs

"Pedro put up drywall in my extra large garage. He was very professional and went over all the details before and after the job. My garage looks great - can't believe I waited 7 years to get this done. Pedro made it very easy. I will definitely be coming to him for any future work I have."

"My first remodel in my home and it went really well. Jon was very accommodating and willing to work within my budget, giving me a couple of different quotes of work they could do. Once the work and budget was decided on, it went very smoothly. Ben did the majority of the work and he was very kind, professional, and open about what tasks were happening that day. I liked that they cleaned as they worked especially since it was a small space and my only bathroom in the house. I would totally recommend them to my friends and family and will be using them again in the near future for upcoming projects."

"I recommend Paul for all your drywall needs. He is professional, courteous and a perfectionist who did a wonderful job. Replacing our countertops and backsplash in our kitchen left us with the drywall torn out in the backsplash area and cut outs in our wall from moving some plumbing. They also cut out the bullnose corner bead at the end of one wall. Paul did an excellent job replacing and patching the drywall and replaced the bullnose corners of our wall. The patching and texturing blends in perfectly with the rest of the wall. He protected our new floors and countertop and left no mess for us to clean up. I would hire Paul anytime I need this type of work."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Yes, it matters which side of drywall you use. One side is smooth, and the other is rough. The smooth side should be facing outward, toward the room, while the rough side should be hidden and facing the studs and framing of the house. The smooth side will be easier to apply tape, joint compound, and, later, paint to.

Whether a drywall anchor can be reused depends on its material, type, and the method of removal. Plastic anchors, including expansion and self-drilling types, are generally designed for single use as they tend to break or deform upon removal. Metal anchors, such as toggle bolts, are more durable and may be reusable if they are not damaged during extraction. However, with toggle bolts, the toggle piece can fall into the wall cavity when the bolt is removed, making it difficult to retrieve. If an anchor is damaged during removal, for instance by having its head cut off, it cannot be reused regardless of the material.

Whether to repair or replace water-damaged plaster depends on the scale of the damage. For small, limited areas, you can often perform a repair yourself. If you choose to paint over small patches, ensure the surface is completely dry and apply a coat of antifungal primer first to prevent mold growth. However, simply painting or plastering over the damage is only a temporary solution that doesn't address the core problem. For more extensive or long-term damage, the plaster may be compromised, and there is a risk of mold. In these cases, it is recommended to remove the damaged section of plasterboard and replace it. You may consider hiring a professional for the repair, and it's worth noting that water damage is often covered by home insurance.

Furring strips, thin strips of wood or metal, are not always required for ceiling drywall installation. If the ceiling surface is even and in good condition, drywall can be directly attached to the ceiling joists using screws. However, furring strips become essential when dealing with irregular surfaces or when additional insulation or soundproofing is needed. They create a level substrate for attaching the drywall. Ultimately, the decision to use furring strips depends on the condition of the existing ceiling and the specific requirements of the project.

All plaster walls will crack over time due to normal house settling and expansion and contraction from temperature and moisture changes. Small, thin hairline cracks are generally not serious and are mostly a cosmetic issue. However, larger or more significant cracks can indicate structural problems.

Here's how to tell the difference:

  • Cosmetic Cracks: Cracks that are 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) or thinner are typically cosmetic.

  • Structural Cracks: Cracks wider than 0.5 cm, excessive or deep cracks, multiple cracks in the same area, or cracks that span around corners can signify a structural or foundation issue. Cracks along the joints where walls meet the ceiling also warrant attention.

For cracks wider than 0.5 cm, structural repair is needed. If a crack is 2.5 cm (1 inch) or wider, or if you notice any signs of a structural problem, it is best to contact a plaster repair professional to assess the damage.
