"We recently had insulation work done by commandos Insulation and the entire experience was excellent from start to finish. The team was professional, punctual, and very knowledgeable. They explained the process clearly, completed the job efficiently, and left everything clean afterward. Their attention to detail and customer service really stood out. "I hired Energy Allies to insulate the walls and attic of my garage shop and gym. They were only scheduled a couple of days out, and they completed the work in a single afternoon. They covered my tools and equipment with plastic to keep the dust off of it and did a great job of cleaning up when they were done. I especially like that they plugged the drywall holes after injecting insulation, so all I have to do is skim with drywall mud. I would definitely hire them again."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

The most obvious con of injection foam is the cost. It’s much more expensive to install than fiberglass or spray foam, but it may be your only option (unless you want to remove entire walls around the home). Another con is that it involves drilling into existing material, which has to be repaired after the foam is injected. Some injection foams are made from products that aren’t environmentally friendly, and improper installation can lead to trapped moisture, which can lead to expensive mold remediation down the road.

Yes, insulating hot water pipes helps your system run more efficiently. This is especially true in basements in colder climates, where cold air likes to settle in. There are a few ways to insulate water pipes (foam is common) to keep hot water hot, reducing the need for your water heater to constantly heat the water in the tank or your circulator to kick on more than necessary.

The best R-value for home insulation depends on where you live and where you’re installing the insulation. Your climate zone plays the biggest role in determining the correct R-value, so be sure to know which zone you live in when determining the R-value you need.

Yes! Outdoor faucet covers work by enclosing the faucet with a thick, insulating material that will keep the faucet warmer than outdoor temperatures. They need to be sealed tightly against the house to work properly, though, so be sure to tighten the rubber strap or drawstring on the insulation cover to best protect your faucets.

Ductwork sweats due to a temperature difference between the air inside the ducts and the surrounding air, similar to how a cold drink develops condensation in the heat. This sweating is a sign that your HVAC system is not operating at peak efficiency. The best way to keep ductwork from sweating is to wrap it in proper insulation, which also improves your system's energy efficiency. Another option is to close off your crawl space and install a dehumidifier to dry the air and lower its dew point.
