We have paid another company to fix his crews errors and asked for reimbursement, Steve said he would send us a check for part of the work, it has been over three weeks and we have not received a check. When you need to repair your galvanized gutters from leaks and caulk isn’t doing the job, you can solder your gutters with a roofer’s soldering iron. First, you’ll need to clean your gutters thoroughly with a wire brush and remove rust and oxidized paint. Next, you’ll make weld points on the gutter and solder over the connection until it’s completely smooth. You can also hire a roofing company near you to tackle this project.

Buried downspouts can freeze during cold weather as cold water runs through them. If you’ve discovered your downspouts are frozen, you can carefully pour hot water down the top of the downspout to defrost them. If that doesn’t work, you may need to dig your downspout back up. Avoid trying to break the ice from the exterior using a hammer as this can cause cracks and damage to your downspout.

To avoid freezing the future, consider adding a heating cable to the exterior, which can adjust heat based on the surrounding temperature.

In most cases, it makes more sense to repair leaking or damaged gutters than it will to replace them. You’ll spend an average of $400 to repair your gutters, while full replacement will cost around $2,000 or more, depending on the gutter material and style and the size of your home. If your gutters are nearing the end of their lifespan—usually around 20 years for aluminum or vinyl gutters or up to 50 years for copper or steel—then it might make sense to replace them, as it could cost you less in the long run.

Icicles can form if your gutters are clogged, but that’s not always the issue. You could also have an ice dam on your roof from poor insulation inside. In that case, the melting snow can refreeze in the gutter even if there isn’t a clog. Whether it’s better to repaint or replace gutters will depend on their overall state. One or two small damages can easily be fixed and covered up with a fresh coat of paint for minimal additional costs. On the other hand, you’ll likely pay less to install a new set-up rather than fixing one that’s heavily damaged.
