However, there may be some extra steps involved, including running pipes from the inside to the outside of your home and digging (and re-filling) a hole for the basin. You will need an ejector pump if your plumbing is below the level of your municipal sewer line. Regular plumbing moves wastewater via gravity, whereas plumbing located below grade can’t rely on gravity to move sewage waste. An ejector pump is needed to provide extra movement to push sewage and wastewater through the pipes. Otherwise, gravity will cause a sewage overflow to occur.

There are a couple of similar alternatives you may consider for a sewage ejector pump, including a grinder pump or a submersible sump pump. Submersible sump pumps protect your home from flooding from outside water, though, rather than handling wastewater from inside. A grinder pump macerates, or shreds, solid waste before pumping it onward to the sewer line.

An ejector pump will last about 7 to 10 years on average—as long as you keep up with maintenance. Properly maintained, it’s not unheard of to get decades of use out of an ejector pump. On a similar note, it’s important to repair or replace the pump right away if you note any damage. Put it off, and you could experience the horror of a sewer line backup.
