Wood and metal are the two most common materials used. Metal tends to be aluminum or steel due to the fact that you don’t need very protective metal, as the material isn’t being subjected to any weather.

Because a railing for concrete stairs is a safety feature, some locations require a permit to do the work, even for a residential setting. Check with your local building inspector to see if you need a permit. In most locations, the residential railing height code requires the handrail to be 34 to 38 inches off the ground. If you buy a concrete stair railing kit, the manufacturer almost certainly will ensure it fits this height requirement.

Building codes require deck railing spindles or balusters to be spaced no more than four inches apart. This is to prevent small children or pets from slipping between the railings and falling off the deck. For the same reason, the railings must also be no more than four inches from the deck floor.
