Schaffer Construction - Designs for Life
5.0
I am extremely pleased. I have mobility issues and need handrails on both sides of our 2 floor-to-floor staircases (where there was only 1 inadequate rail) and 1 two-step staircase from the garage to the house. I wanted a certified age-in-place specialist to be sure the rails were ADA-compliant. Becky and Ben came out and assessed my situation, including making sure that the rest of the house was adequate for my needs. They were professional and friendly, explained what they were going to do, and accepted my questions and suggestions. This was not a normal handyman job. The cost seemed high when I got the proposal, but watching them work and seeing the result made me realize that I got my money's worth. The finish on the new railings closely matches the railings already there.

Could not have been more pleased with the results. Craftsmanship was excellent, and the price was very reasonable. Tony arrived exactly when he had promised, completed the job as described, and left no dust or debris behind. He completed the installation in a very reasonable time, but took the time to create a high quality product.

Sherman Houston, owner, did an outstanding job of working with us and providing a hand drawn design for a handrail and railing on the front porch and stairs. He offered special insights on the design of the project to blend it into the overall layout of the house, calling upon his long experiences in home construction and woodwork.

J Montano Inc

J Montano Inc did an excellent job completing this job on a tight, three-day schedule. At the end of the third day, Jose Montano personally inspected the work and noted three discrepancies his crew needed to come back to fix: two ceilings that needed to be smoothed out and repainted, and applying a final finish to new stair handrails. I did not notice these discrepancies, so I was impressed by Mr. Montano's attention to detail and commitment to completing a quality job. Because of the company's busy Fall schedule, it took a while to complete the rework. However, Mr. Montano did come through and his crew did an excellent job. We are very pleased with the end result and would definitely hire this company again and recommend them to friends/neighbors.

Rich is a general contractor. He did use sub-contractors to do the more technical work. They worked for us between December and April of 2015. They did HVAC. A handrail was replaced. A subfloor was put in. And then installed counter tops and a kitchen island. They did crown moulding as well as the handrail. My wife is very particular about how things are doing. Instead of doing what she wanted, he tended to argue as to why he wanted to do it a different way. He had no reason to argue. I felt like he was taking some shortcuts. He just wanted to get done with the job as soon as possible.

Elite Contractors Services Inc

Absolutely ELITE! After 2 full bathroom remodels and a new office for my wife and since we have had such great previous experiences with Ken and his team. When it came to installing new handrails, pin top balusters, shoe rail and newel posts we once again elicited the professionals. Since staircases were so new to us we did our due diligence and contacted a couple "stair experts" for ideas and estimates. Importantly I should mention how difficult it was even finding someone willing to install a "s-curve" and gooseneck so that the handrail is continuous around corners. We knew what we wanted and I quickly learned not only was Elite one of the few willing to install a "s-curve" and gooseneck or was even capable of such but the cost was also less than estimates I received which would not include the continuous rail. Obviously there is a difference between doing something and doing something well and in this case we could not be more ecstatic with the final results! I'm not sure where Ken found his carpenter but the guy is a rock star! The attention to detail is clearly evident not only with respect to the handrails, balusters and newel posts but also the shoe and base moldings. After watching the precision he works with and how perfect the final product is, I'm more inclined to call him an artist. This all before we had 9 new doors with new hinges hung. I knew hanging new doors also requires a level expertise... if you want them to close correctly. Elite also provides this service and now we finally have doors in our upstairs bedrooms! In sum, the quality of work is unparalleled, as is the cost. Scale of 1-10, Elite receives 10's across the board! Thank you Ken and your team!

Vintage Wood Floors & Stairs
5.0
Wow. It was truly a privilege to work with Arnold Morello of Vintage Floors & Stairs. You have to see our "before" and "after" pictures to get the full effect of the work done, but even those cannot convey the amazing job Arnold did in our home. A little back story: Our row-home, like most, is old, and includes many original fixtures that are not up to modern housing code. One thing we have always known we would have to replace (both because we wanted to ensure we met code requirements, and also because it was so hideous) was our banister. Our nasty old banister (again, see "before" pics) which was approximately 10 inches TOO SHORT. Well, now that we have a little bouncing bundle of joy, concerns like railing height suddenly matter a lot more. We decided to pull the plug and invest the money into making our upstairs hallway/stairway safer and more beautiful. Of course, we had no idea where to turn at first as we needed both someone who would re-do the hardwood floors (which had been covered for decades with tiles and carpet) and tear out the existing rail/banister structure and build something new. We needed a craftsman, not any old flooring company. We could have gone with one company to do the floor, and another to do the banister, but were fearful that the two elements wouldn't flow well with each other if we went with separate contractors for each. After reading great reviews of Vintage Floors on Angie's List, we called them for an estimate. A total of SIX companies came to give estimates for the proposed job, and of the six, none came close to the professionalism, detail in description, and knowledge as Arnold (the owner) possessed. It was an easy choice to make. My husband and I were so impressed with Arnold, but were afraid we wouldn't be able to hire him as his initial estimate was out of our price range. He graciously worked with us to find a price we could all work with. The project entailed two major parts, but a few other smaller (but also important) details. We had the existing banister structure torn out and the original (but dilapidated) hardwood covered with new oak flooring on two levels - a small landing area off the main stairs and the main upstairs hallway. In addition to this, we needed the three steps leading from the landing to main hall to be reinforced, and the handrail attached in a way - and place - that would also be code compliant. It is worth noting that the three stairs that needed reinforcing had basically no structural support and were just waiting to break. Now, however, they are sturdy as anything and look fantastic, too! Arnold is truly a consummate gentleman and craftsman. He treated us, and our home, with such great respect. (I should also point out that, unlike many other companies, he - the owner - did every step of the process. Nothing was sourced out to workers I had never met before, as so often happens with home construction projects). I am home with the baby most of the day, and he did a phenomenal job ensuring the highest level of cleanliness during the working hours. We've had a lot of work done in our home over the years, and this was definitely one of the best in terms of dust containment/cleanliness. Even with the idiosyncrasies and irregularities of our 120+ year old home, Arnold did an incredible job perfecting every cut and piece of material to make it all look seamless. The new oak floor we had laid on top of the existing hardwood flows perfectly with the other (previously) finished hardwood in other rooms. The banister and all of its components are simply perfect (and so sturdy!). When problems presented themselves (for instance, putting the handrail back where it had been previously would have violated code requirements in one area for not allowing proper clearance), Arnold would problem-solve and present my husband and I with several options - always giving his expert opinion but willing to do whatever we wanted. And in the case of the handrail, for anyone who is interested, we decided to attach it to the brick wall on the opposite side of where it was previously, which was a more complicated job, but Arnold did it without any complaint. We would recommend Vintage Floors and Stairs to anyone without reservation. Fair and competitive pricing, craftsmanship and perfection beyond compare, and a gorgeous finished product. We are so, so happy we went with our gut and chose the best.

Interactions with Billy were great. He came to my house and we discussed the various options on the best way to replace my handrails and ballusters. I only got as far as receiving the stimate when I had to put the project on hold. I will call Billy again when I can have this project done.

Fantastic workmanship! We are very, very pleased! The owner is wonderful to work with and his employees are non-stop and constantly working. We are having them come back and remodel the kitchen; stucco the garage which is now block; add new roof and gutters on the garage; new patio off the french doors with iron handrails; new outside basement door; buff out the hardwood floors.

They did a wonderful job on our deck, we appreciate the quality materials used and fantastic workmanship. They worked quickly, finishing in a week and left the backyard very clean. They did extra details like the splinter proof handrail and the LED stair lights that really make a difference. Everyone who worked at our house was extremely nice and polite. I would recommend this company to everyone.

Moss Building & Design

Great job. Moss showed up promptly, spent the necessary time to understand the work and got down to it. He worked meticulously to remove all the rotten framing around a porch support and to replace it with the new materials I provided. His finished work is beautiful. Then he moved on to the deck. He replaced over 75 linear feet of hand rail that was cracked, split and in general disrepair. His cuts for the angles were great and the new handrails look awesome

They really did an excellent job - they were timely, attentive and addressed all concerns that I had immediately. They worked with me to make sure I got exactly what I wanted. They also made excellent recommendations regarding style & structural issues. They went the extra mile to make sure the work blended well with my existing home. They matched the existing paint & touched up places that needed it to make it look finished. The crew was friendly, hard working and on time. Couldn't be happier.

The Stair Guys
5.0
The stair guys are great to work with, very detail oriented, with lots of ideas for stair design, and don't charge humongous amounts of money. We hired the stair guys after the general contractor who built our second story addition completely botched the stair construction (and charged more for the crappy staircase he built than The Stair Guys asked for the whole project). I wanted to cry every time I walked up and down those stairs. The Stair Guys weren't the fasted contractors I have ever worked with, but they are very good and the wait was definitely worth it. We highly recommend them.

Fantastic. Snow and a few standard delays knocked us off schedule a few days, but Jose and his team stayed dedicated to finishing our bathroom with the highest quality in quick order. Despite the additional time, Jose did not deviate much from original quote. If you want top quality work, at reasonable prices, with unimpeachable honesty and professionalism, Jose and Mu?oz Construction should be your go to team.

Evergreen Remodeling

We've loved this company for carpentry repairs in the past, so when we decided to redo our basement TV room, Terry's the only person we called. She came in with great ideas to meet our needs, and no upselling. She really just wanted to give us exactly what we wanted, which included new cabinetry, shelves, and countertops, stair handrails, and drywall repairs. She also advised us on some lighting changes that we had our own electrician handle. The Evergreen crew is unfailingly professional, diligent, responsible, and talented. We could not be more pleased and will definitely call Evergreen in the future.

Mr. Handyman of Northern Virginia - Arlington to Haymarket

Work was performed by Steve and he did a great job. He arrived early for the 8:00am appointment. We talked about the work and I was informed it would not be a 4 hour job (given 2-4 hour timeframe from when I scheduled the job) and he asked if there was anything else he could take care of while he was there - we determined the handrails on the stairs were loose and should be fixed also. After the water was shut-off and the house was drained, he went straight to work taking the sink and shut-off valves apart. He looked at the faucet I had previously purchased. The shut-off replacement valves I had purchased were not correct so he then went to the store to purchase the correct material for the valves and the handrail work. The time to get the material was longer than expected but it was snowing so I cannot hold that against him due to the inclement weather. After he got back, the rest of the work was performed to finish the job. After the work was paid for, I had to ask him for an itemized bill which was e-mailed to me. Overall, Steve did a great job and I would request him again in the future.
