Wow. It was truly a privilege to work with Arnold Morello of Vintage Floors & Stairs. You have to see our "before" and "after" pictures to get the full effect of the work done, but even those cannot convey the amazing job Arnold did in our home. A little back story: Our row-home, like most, is old, and includes many original fixtures that are not up to modern housing code. One thing we have always known we would have to replace (both because we wanted to ensure we met code requirements, and also because it was so hideous) was our banister. Our nasty old banister (again, see "before" pics) which was approximately 10 inches TOO SHORT. Well, now that we have a little bouncing bundle of joy, concerns like railing height suddenly matter a lot more. We decided to pull the plug and invest the money into making our upstairs hallway/stairway safer and more beautiful. Of course, we had no idea where to turn at first as we needed both someone who would re-do the hardwood floors (which had been covered for decades with tiles and carpet) and tear out the existing rail/banister structure and build something new. We needed a craftsman, not any old flooring company. We could have gone with one company to do the floor, and another to do the banister, but were fearful that the two elements wouldn't flow well with each other if we went with separate contractors for each. After reading great reviews of Vintage Floors on Angie's List, we called them for an estimate. A total of SIX companies came to give estimates for the proposed job, and of the six, none came close to the professionalism, detail in description, and knowledge as Arnold (the owner) possessed. It was an easy choice to make. My husband and I were so impressed with Arnold, but were afraid we wouldn't be able to hire him as his initial estimate was out of our price range. He graciously worked with us to find a price we could all work with. The project entailed two major parts, but a few other smaller (but also important) details. We had the existing banister structure torn out and the original (but dilapidated) hardwood covered with new oak flooring on two levels - a small landing area off the main stairs and the main upstairs hallway. In addition to this, we needed the three steps leading from the landing to main hall to be reinforced, and the handrail attached in a way - and place - that would also be code compliant. It is worth noting that the three stairs that needed reinforcing had basically no structural support and were just waiting to break. Now, however, they are sturdy as anything and look fantastic, too! Arnold is truly a consummate gentleman and craftsman. He treated us, and our home, with such great respect. (I should also point out that, unlike many other companies, he - the owner - did every step of the process. Nothing was sourced out to workers I had never met before, as so often happens with home construction projects). I am home with the baby most of the day, and he did a phenomenal job ensuring the highest level of cleanliness during the working hours. We've had a lot of work done in our home over the years, and this was definitely one of the best in terms of dust containment/cleanliness. Even with the idiosyncrasies and irregularities of our 120+ year old home, Arnold did an incredible job perfecting every cut and piece of material to make it all look seamless. The new oak floor we had laid on top of the existing hardwood flows perfectly with the other (previously) finished hardwood in other rooms. The banister and all of its components are simply perfect (and so sturdy!). When problems presented themselves (for instance, putting the handrail back where it had been previously would have violated code requirements in one area for not allowing proper clearance), Arnold would problem-solve and present my husband and I with several options - always giving his expert opinion but willing to do whatever we wanted. And in the case of the handrail, for anyone who is interested, we decided to attach it to the brick wall on the opposite side of where it was previously, which was a more complicated job, but Arnold did it without any complaint. We would recommend Vintage Floors and Stairs to anyone without reservation. Fair and competitive pricing, craftsmanship and perfection beyond compare, and a gorgeous finished product. We are so, so happy we went with our gut and chose the best.
