Clearly wanted an outcome that would make us happy - and we are!
For the floor we decided to upgrade the floor from linoleum to tile and purchased the tiles ourselves. We asked Jenkins to purchase and install Duroc for the sub-floor to make it more stable for the tiles, which they did. Unfortunately, when they installed the Duroc they covered a heating/airconditioning vent in the floor. They knew they made a mistake but didn't tell us hoping we wouldn't notice and installed the tiles the next day anyway. The tile installation was atrocious; the tile lines were not straight, the spacing between the tiles was not even, and the individual tiles were not level (i.e., uniform height). To their credit, Jenkins bought new tiles and completely re-did the floor to an acceptable level, but this kind of substandard workmanship should never have occurred.
For the new cabinets, Jenkins convinced us that Wolf cabinets were an upgrade from what the builder originally provided that would fit within the estimate budget and would be available within two weeks versus four to five weeks for most other cabinet makers. The cabinets were available within two weeks, but looked like they were assembled from components rejected by quality control. A door was off-color; there were numerous cracks and dents in doors and drawer faces; in two places there were gashes in the front, bottom frame of the upper cabinets; the pantry was missing all the shelves; the lazy susan was improperly installed; and two cabinets had six inch cracks in the door frames (which Jenkins tried to hide with poorly applied caulking). Additionally, the installation workmanship was extremely poor quality. We wanted to preserve our existing backsplash, but Jenkins left a large gap between the upper cabinets and the backsplash which they filled with caulk that looked terrible. They re-used a filler piece from our old cabinets next to the dishwasher that did not match the color or style of the new cabinets. They attached the island with only two screws through the tile into the subfloor so the island was not very secure. The under-cabinet microwave was very poorly installed with the mounting screws at a gross angle rather than straight; so much so that it was impossible to get the microwave flush with the bottom of the cabinet and left an approximately two inch gap. The Jenkins solution was going to be a filler piece rather than mounting the microwave correctly.
Despite all the cabinet problems, Jenkins argued with us about replacing components and cabinets; particularly the cabinets with the six inch cracks in the door frames. We would agree to a list verbally and then the written punch list would omit items.
When it came to correcting the cabinet and workmanship errors, the Jenkins project manager and branch supervisor were very dismissive toward my wife and would not negotiate directly with her or take her inputs seriously. They claimed they had to work with me because the insurance policy was in my name which was not true. In the end, we fired Jenkins Restorations and took a cash settlement from the insurance company that we used to hire a a vastly superior contractor through Angie's List.
The restoration occurred around the holiday times and right before a winter blizzard. Jenkins remained in contact with us while we settled with our Insurance company. They also conferenced with the insurance company in reaching an agreement on estimates. Jenkin's was responsive in communication and outlining all of the work that would need to take place.
They provided honest and realistic schedules and were able to meet them. The manager kept us apprised of any challenges and provided prompt and complete responses to questions. He effectively managed all of subcontractor work, addressing any potential quality control issues. He was helpful, flexible, and creative in his management of the entire project.
"I just wanted to follow up with you about the job that Colin Sonnenday did on the rebuild of our house. I said most, if not all, of this during our phone conversation a while back but we (my wife included here) can?t say enough about the great job that
Colin and his team did for us. He greatly exceeded our expectations in all areas of reconstruction; including quality of work, the overall process, and the overall schedule. He walked us through each step of the reconstruction, answered all of our questions (a lot of them before we could ask them), and kept us informed of everything that was happening via email, text, phone, and regular walk throughs. He helped us stay within our insurance budget and within our personal (extra) budget. Best of all we were able to ?take possession? of the house in June which was almost 2 months earlier than we expected. Because of all of his efforts a situation that started out as a nightmare ended up with a beautiful 'almost new' house that our family can enjoy for many years to come.
Our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to Colin Sonnenday and Jenkins Restoration for the excellent work and overall performance during the entire process (from the first day of the fire right up to today) of the reconstruction of our home."
Someone from Jenkins came out to take an estimate. He was late, which was a sign of things to come. Every step was handled poorly with poor communication. Days were wasted at every point. Jenkins gives themselves a very generous schedule to finish work on, which probably means they can waste time throughout the process and still finish "on schedule" when nothing goes wrong. In my case, one legitimate issue meant that all those wasted days have meant that I'll be at least a week past schedule by the time it is finally complete.
It took an extra week after I approved the work for him to schedule the pack out, since the project manager couldn't communicate with the subcontractors doing the moving. He would regularly reach out late at night and expect me to drop everything to miss work the next morning. He only came to my house once (to make the estimate), and was often impossible to reach, which complicated things with both myself and the subcontractors who couldn't reach him when needed. On multiple occasions my house was left completely unlocked without my receiving any notice because the subcontractors couldn't reach him and just left. I finally started leaving them notes so that they would call me directly, I couldn't trust that he would be reachable.
Finally, as mentioned, since everything is subcontracted out and the Jenkins rep only comes to your house once, it meant that he was regularly giving me timelines and projections that didn't match what was actually happening. We'll see when this project actually gets finished, but it ended up meaning I had guests sleeping on an inflatable sofa instead of in the guest bedroom I had planned a month ago when this started.
Given the double mark up I imagine you pay with Jenkins, I'd recommend going elsewhere.
the insurance company and all I paid was the deductible.
They were fair. They did quality work. They were professional. They did what they said. I had no concerns.
Took approximately 6 x months from start to finish, work is not bad, actually it is very good but it should not take 6 months to replace a front door, first 3 months, they ordered the wrong size and the contractor they hired tried to blame it on taking the measurements in the dark, although he took the measurements in broad daylight in front of me on a Saturday morning at 10 am. But I guess he didn't want to let his boss know. There was only damage to the frame and the door but they stated that it is best to replace the entire inset which includes the door, the side windows and the window across the top of the door, I thought that was overkill but my insurance company recommended them so I figured they knew what they were doing. The total cost came to just over $6700 dollars of which I had a $1000 dollar deductible. They actually know what they are doing but the time from start to finish in my opinion was unsatisfactory and then one of the contractors installed my French door handles upside down so the handle is actually pointing down towards the floor and then tried to convince me it is normal to do that, I told him to look at every house in the neighborhood and I guarantee you won't see any doors with their French handles pointed down. Of course he corrected the problem.
Don't get me wrong, Jenkins may actually be a good company and the Program Manager was very helpful in assessing my concerns and responsive but they need to seriously re-evaluate the sub-contractors they are using to do the work.
