I previously posted a review about this contractor.  He responded that he did not have me in his customer database and did not know who I was and never did the master bedroom closet job. He lived in our newly purchased house for 2 months while doing the work. We were new to the island and paid checks to Steve Zuwala (the contact for this business). I'm sure he remembers the whole debacle. I have email confirmation of the job and cancelled checks.
Response from Maui's Handyman Service
"Interesting. Waiting 6 years to post a complaint about a job. We make it a habit to correct problems (should there be any) right away. The question is, why you made no call to make the changes you felt needed to be done? I send progress pictures to off island clients and ask for their input. I am certain that if I did this project, that there will be exchanged emails between us with pictures. I am also certain that there IS a final set of pictures of the completed project with the invoice for labor and materials and probably a return email from you. Surely it is obvious by our record here on Angie's List, (57 "A"'s) that we take care of our customers. In addition, we do not take ANY money up front and are only paid when the customer is satisfied and signs off on it. Which leads me to ask why you are registering this with AL - at all? Your review is one of the reasons we choose not to continue using Angies List. ANYONE can file a bad review and it is immediately posted - the company has lttle recourse but to try and defend itself AFTER the damage has been done. I would suggest anyone reading reviews on Angies List to take this into consideration. If the comapny has a history of bad reviews - chances are the company is bad. If another has a history of "A"s and "B"s - chances are they earned them. This should not be a forum for people to take out grudges or try to defame companies who work hard to do good and maintain a solid reputation in the community. If you have a problem with a job done by anyone, call the provider, tell them your concerns and by all means, hold the final payment until the job is completed to your satisfaction. Try to refrain from posting bad reviews about a provider simply because you, weeks, months or years later, decide that the project or service should have been done another way. Professional providers like us rely on positive reviews especially if shopping customers are not aware that companies like ours take pride in customer satisfaction. P.S. Look at the current reviews posted below as an example of current satisfied customers."

Steve showed up exactly on time.  He very efficiently put clips on all the window screens on our house and our rental unit, and that was a very large number of screens.  He even secured the 2nd-story screens, which nobody else would agree to do.  Now there are no little spaces for mosquitos or other bugs to pass through to the inside of the house.  Yeah!    He brought with him a selection of 3 different door sweeps, so we could choose the one we liked best.  He attached that and trimmed it so no bugs could get into the house.  I would definitely hire him again, and for several different projects we need to do.  The cost included materials and was only $294, and that was certainly a pleasant surprise.  I unequivocally recommend the expert knowledge and workmanship of this company.

It took a long time from original quote to start of work.  They had underestimated the time of work involved and then decided that they could not complete all of the quote.
Response from Maui's Handyman Service
"First we heard of this! We make every effort to come as close to a perfect job for our over 100 clients a month as possible. It is not always possible, but more often than not we do. This review really has us frustrated. Yes. The job did not start on time, there were unforeseen delays. First, there was the rain - jobs that were scheduled before the [Member Name Removed]'s were pushed to a future date and had to be done before the [Member Name Removed]'s We had contact with the [Member Name Removed]'s with updates as to when we would be able to start and even suggested that because of the delay they could choose someone else to do the work if they wanted and we would bow out. They chose to stay the course. It is worth noting that we DID NOT receive a dime up front and we paid for ALL the material and delivery close to $800 BEFORE a single nail was driven. The estimate called for three days to complete but after removing the existing porch - more dry rot was discovered and additional material and labor was needed to complete the project. (Of which no additional charge was applied) Here is the frustrating part. Having received "no money" up front and working in the rain to complete their project, when the job was done, we walked Mr. [Member Name Removed] around the porch and showed him the work. He was pleased. The day we were finished, we did not ask for payment. We sent the invoice by email. It took a week or more to get a check from the [Member Name Removed]'s Here is my question: In all that time, why did we not receive a call? If you are unsatisfied, for any reason, why not call? Why send a check until you are satisfied with the job you hired us to do? Why post a review like this without allowing us to take whatever steps necessary to make you happy? A very small percentage of our business comes from Angie's List but last year we received they highest honor for customer satisfaction. A recognition that only %5 of businesses receive. We are proud of that. But most of our commercial and residential work comes from referrals and customers who use our services over and over. People who have used us and are happy to recommend us. Those reviews are not seen here but reflect how we have managed to stay in business since 2003. We understand if we are being paid to perform a job, you as the customer deserve the best job we can do. As a business, we need our customers to be happy and one way for us to be certain you are is our promise to perform the work WITHOUT any money up front and paid only WHEN your are satisfied with the work performed. If you examine the completed work, tell us you are happy and then write a check, what are we to assume? However, if later you do discover something that you need corrected, why not call and ask us to make the changes? We have already proven that we answer our phones, read our emails and respond to Angie's List. We are available six days a week. Once again, we apologize for not meeting the [Member Name Removed]'s expectations we only wish they would have called or emailed us of their disenchantment so we could have made the necessary changes to make them happy."

Was suppose to take out bush/tree but didn't.  That was originally what the job was for.
Response from Maui's Handyman Service
"We apologize for not being able to meet or exceed your expectations- but the bush was in a place that made it difficult to be removed. One of the workers from the County of Maui was present at the time and told us that the bush was the County of Maui's responsibility to remove as they were removing the same type of bushes across the street in the gulch."

It was installed on our second story window and very nicely finished.  Rather than covering the rest of the window with plywood, as many would do, he filled in the space with plexiglass so it still lets light in and looks great.  He also left us the undamaged glass and as much of the window hardware in place as possible in case we ever want to remove the A/C and restore the window to its original form.
I can certainly understand why the business is so highly rated, it was a pleasure working with both him and Star and we look forward to working with them in the future.  I would highly recommend Maui's Handyman.

Steve was great--he brought extra supplies and did a very professional job of installing my AC. I was thrilled that he brought a piece of plexiglass and fit it into the space above the AC so that the light came in and it looked like a window instead of using a dark piece of plywood. It looked so good when he was done! And he installed the AC without making any holes in the walls.
Star is the one on their team who makes the appointments and then helps out on the jobs, like she did at my house. She is very warm and friendly and always tries to fit me in, though their schedule is packed.
Steve is the kind of person you like having around. He's funny and very professional at the same time. He really knows what he is doing. I'll have them back the next time I have a job to do.

Maui Handyman probably does great service in other areas, but we do not recommend them for any custom cabinetry or finish carpentry.
We contracted for a custom tv cabinet/closet in my master bedroom.  The work was not done properly and the planks do not line up.  The door hinges are cheap (old kitchen cabinet style) and ugly.  The wood is too thick and is a barn-quality raw knotty pine. The closet is too deep (not standard depth) and takes up too much of the room - a lot of wasted space.  The drawers on the bottom section do not line up.  The handyman wrote notes on my imperial plaster walls that are still visible today.   We agreed to pay for time and materials and we paid for all charges, however, when I reviewed the material receipts, many of the receipts pre-dated the work by a couple of months.
Additionally, the cable outlets never worked and I had the cable company come out to try to fix them, but they were not able to connect the cable to the outlets, so the TV cabinet cannot be used for a TV.

"Not sure about this review. The year is 2010. Five years ago. We do not have this customer in our database nor were we a Angie's List Member at this time. There are several companies with a name similar to ours so I can see how this would be confusing."

I had requested Steve to come perform handyman services twice in the past.  The first time my husband and I requested a service was actually a year or two ago.  We had asked that our garbage disposal was replaced.  Steve was "not familiar" with the particular garbage disposal and needed to look over the instructions with my husband as well as borrow my husband's tools and required the help of my husband.  The disposal was not installed up to code as the disposal came with a wall plug and we didn't have an outlet under the sink, Steve instead cut the plug to wire to existing plug and covered with electrical tape.  At least we didn't get charged for this installation since my husband was helping, but our house is not one we would like to rig anything.
The recent experience was even more aggravating as I had called in November and told that it would be three weeks until Steve would be available.  I explained over the phone to a very professional sounding individual all the items on my to do list.  The list included fixing a gutter on the front of my house, changing out the toilet in our powder room, hanging a door to our pantry, and finding a solution to a rusting mailbox in a rock base.  The office assistant called me several times to confirm the time and date and to make sure we were aware of the prices and ensure we had supplies we needed.  We were told if we didn't have the supplies then Steve could go and pick up whatever we would need.
The day came that Steve showed up and I had the supplies we had bought ready for him.  I showed Steve the gutter issue and all the gutter supplies.  He said to show him the other projects.  Next was the toilet which we had made sure to get ready.  After looking at the existing toilet and the toilet we would use to replace it, Steve said that he didn't think we could use the toilet we had as there would be a "shadow" on the tile from the present toilet.  He said I could buy another toilet and he would come another day to install.  He did not measure the toilet, so not sure why he was so sure it would not work.   He went back to the front where the gutter was, told us we could buy some type of black tube or pipe material and it would be really "easy" for us to buy and change.  I guess all the actual gutters we bought were too complicated for Steve.   Next came the door to be hung, Steve said it would have to be shaved down to fit as we had our floors retiled and the door would not fit.  He was helpful enough to instruct my husband and I on what saw to use and how to cut the door to hang.  My husband had just had surgery on his shoulder and neither he or I would be sawing anything, hence why we called Steve.  Lastly came the mailbox.  I admit I did not know what our options were to fix the rusting mailbox inside the rock post.  Steve told us to call a mason company, never actually attempting to remove the current box but instead took the smaller mailbox we bought and placed it inside our rusting mailbox...not quite the fix we were looking for.  Steve was at our home for maybe twenty minutes, said "well I guess nothing more I can do today, no charge!"  and was quickly out the door and into his truck driving away, which by the was a truck with surfboards in the bed and a woman in the front seat!  I am pretty sure Steve had no intention of doing any work for us that day.  There was no mention of going to get any of the supplies that he mentioned or actually scheduling to come again.  Apparently he has no qualms about wasting anyone's time.  I am not sure how he survives never charging anyone since he doesn't seem to perform many real handyman duties.  I am going to guess that a good number of the individuals that reviewed Maui's Handyman Service don't actually live on Maui and are only seeing pictures of the work.  We may not have been charged anything, however he certainly wasted our time making us wait several weeks for Steve to show and essentially do nothing.

Response from Maui's Handyman Service
"We apologize for your experience with my services. Let's start with the garbage disposal. When we received the call, I was in the area and not in my service truck. I received the call and told you that I would come by for a estimate. When I arrived, your husband mentioned he had tools and so we installed your garbage disposal using what tools he had. I have installed many garbage disposals and in every instance the disposals do not come with the electrical cord and the original is used (if an existing garbage disposal is present as was in this case). I do not recall seeing "electrical tape" on the wire at the time and if I did, I would have certainly mentioned it. We replaced the original with the new unit using the wiring that was already available with the assistance of the husband who approved the process as it took place. As, [Member Name] mentioned, we did not charge for the installation of the garbage disposal because I was there for an estimate only but installed the disposal with the husband anyway. As to the second visit. Why call us again if the first service was not satisfactory? Again, we went out to access what needed to be done and give a estimate. (It is worth noting that our estimates are free. We look at the work that needs to be done and provide a written estimate BEFORE we begin any job to assure the homeowner they are getting exactly what was promised) Sometimes, when a customer calls for work to be done, they unknowingly use terms that are not accurate. In this case, one of the items she was looking to remedy was not the "Gutter" but the downspout. The current downspout was pooling in front of the house. I surveyed it with the husband and we talked about solutions. After explaining that a simple fix would be a flexible gutter sold at any hardware store, he said "he could do that" and I agreed. The next item was a pantry door that needed to be rehung. Unfortunately, new tile was installed raising the floor and causing the old door to be too tall needing to be cut before if could be installed. After showing this to the husband and explaining how the door should be cut, he said "he could do it" and I agreed. Regarding the toilet. The original toilet base was large, the replacement toilet they wanted to install was smaller, having installed several toilets, I explained that because the bases were different, there may be a "ring" or "Shadow" that will show around the smaller base. Were they okay with that or did they want to replace it with a similar toilet. They chose the latter. Next as the mailbox. The original mailbox is a metal box fused into a concrete and stone post. They had purchased a new mailbox to replace it. I explained to the husband that the original mailbox was rusted in place and should be removed by a masonry but because the original mailbox could not close and he was concerned about his mail, he asked if there was an immediate solution. I suggested getting as much of the old box out as possible and temporarily sliding in the new one until it could be done properly. He asked if I could do it "real quick" and as a favor, I removed a portion of the old box and slid in the new one. His mail was now temporarily secure. Once again, because the fix was minor, we did not charge for the service. We appreciate all of our customers and want to provide the best service we can. As you can see by the other reviews here on Angie's List, we are doing just that. Sometimes, we are not able to get out to service a customer right away, but our office is in constant contact with you and you are notified when the next available day is and you are called the day of the appointment to confirm the time of arrival. We do not want experiences like this to happen to our customers and we work hard to correct them. As a side note, we do not surf nor do any of our service vehicles have "surf boards" or "surf board racks"."

This is our second experience with this company. We were very pleased with the first job.
This project had to be postponed for a couple of weeks due to a destructive storm in our area. We were contacted and informed of the delay and the expected new date. We were called again the morning he was coming. The workman is prompt, friendly, courteous, and aims to please. He'd told us that he would do another small job at no additional charge, which he did after the big job was completed. He seems very experienced, completing the post replacement in a few hours, much faster than I'd expected.
He cleaned up the area before telling me he was leaving, and pointed out the extra job he'd done. His office has been in frequent contact up to the time he came to do the job.
We will be calling him for future work.

Steve, Star, and Gary are wonderful. We recently purchased a vacation/retirement home on Maui and bought a "fixer-upper" because of its great location and view.  I was really worried about attempting to do renovations from afar and after having other friends and family on-island warn me about a lot of bad experiences, I arrived in Maui hoping that we made a good decision in choosing Steve and his team.
I can't say enough good things about my experience and now consider them all an extension of our family!  Steve, Star, and Gary went above and beyond to help me complete everything on our list, and then some(!), in the month I was on Maui. From working on weekends, staying late to help me prep for the next day's photographer, to dealing with donating furniture & appliances, and advising me on other good subs for materials and services best left to "experts" --i.e. granite & windows, I truly couldn't have completed so much without Maui's Handyman Service.
As for the so-called island time--I can say that Steve, Gary, and Star, put to shame every other handyman and contractor I've worked with on the mainland. They are fair, hardworking, and responsive. As such, they are rightfully in-demand, so for any remodeling assistance, call in advance, book more time than you think you need (always surprises in every home), and take care of the people who take care of you!
While we are off-island, I know that I can count on them to respond to anything we need and that it will be done right and as quickly as needed. Don't hesitate to use them for your handyman (and remodeling) needs.
