"Augusta’s Finest Hardscapes installed a retaining wall in my backyard. Will and his crew did an excellent job. They were very professional, polite, and friendly. He did exactly what he said he would do. I love the wall and will definitely use Will again."

"I needed a retaining wall replaced. Jim was attentive through the entire process. Jim communicated by email, text and phone, and never left me "wondering" or waiting. The wall came out beautiful, and strong. Oh- and I was out of town through the entire process, and Jim and his team did not disappoint - not even a little. I will contact Augusta Land Design first for my future landscaping projects."

"Purchased a home 7 months ago and the previous homeowners/home inspector did not disclose previous water issues in the crawl space. With the recent heavy rains our crawl space flooded and after speaking with several locals (as we are new to the area) Chris and his team were overwhelmingly recommended. Not only did Chris identify the previous issues, he gave us a solution! The crew was on the job early, were very professional, and did an amazing job. They left our crawlspace clean and finished the job just in time. Within 2 days we had heavy rain again and with the system installed our crawlspace was dry! Thank you guys and we truly appreciate your hard work! We highly recommend Riggins Moisture Control!"

Small jobs welcome

"The guys at C&A took on a colossal project that it seemed no one else wanted to do. They worked through the harshest elements in February to complete the task. They leveled my property, installed a french drain, and built a retaining wall. They were professional and did a remarkable job. I would highly recommend them for any landscaping/developing jobs."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

While vinyl is the least costly material for building a retaining wall, the most cost-effective method is to use wood or concrete blocks for a DIY retaining wall under 2 feet tall. Wood is inexpensive but lasts 20 years or more with care. Concrete can cost a little more but is stronger and will last longer with less maintenance.

Failure to compact the soil during construction is the most common cause of leaning retaining walls. In addition, poor drainage can lead to excessive water pressure behind a retaining wall, pushing against it until it begins to move forward away from the soil it is holding back.

Yes, to build a retaining wall, a permit is required. Similarly, any repairs or modifications to an existing retaining wall require permits. If the planned wall measures higher than 4 feet, most municipalities require designs and permits come through a licensed engineer. In some locations, if the wall is shorter than 4 feet, a permit may not be required. For the requirements in your area, contact your local government.

There are contractors specifically trained in the design and construction of retaining walls. Retaining wall contractors are skilled at dealing with the soil on your property and assessing what kind of drainage should be installed. They will recommend the best materials to use for the project and can handle the processing of permits by local authorities.

Most railroad tie retaining walls have a life span of 20 to 30 years, though you may need to replace your wall sooner if it’s repeatedly exposed to heavy rain, runoff, and excess moisture. Railroad ties are typically treated with creosote, which makes them much more durable than untreated wood. Though they last longer, they don’t last forever. For the most longevity, make sure your retaining wall has a sturdy base and steel reinforcements. You should also install drainage to direct water away from the wall.
