"We had to get a large retaining wall beside our driveway replaced. There was a very large holly bush that was causing the wall to bulge over the years. The estimates for the wall were all over the place (as high as almost 10k). We received many quotes and we went with Live Oak because their pricing was competitive but especially because they REALLY know their stuff about drainage. They removed the holly, completely replaced the retaining wall, graded the yard after removing old drains and adding a new one, and planted new shrubs. It was a large job and a bit nerve wracking but Tonya was awesome. She was available at any time and would respond to my texts if I had questions (even after hours and on the weekend). We had setbacks with bad weather but since her communication was so great, I wasn't concerned that we were behind schedule. I knew she was on top of it. The end result was a great looking wall."

"Above Average Concrete truly lives up to their name! They installed stamped concrete in my driveway, and the results are absolutely beautiful. From start to finish, William’s team was professional, knowledgeable, and detail-oriented. They took the time to explain the process, answered all my questions, and made sure everything was done exactly how I envisioned it. The craftsmanship is top-tier—the stamping is clean, the design is flawless, and it completely elevated the look of my home. They showed up on time, worked efficiently, and left the area clean once the job was finished. You can tell they take pride in their work. If you’re looking for quality concrete work and want something that stands out, I highly recommend Above Average Concrete. I couldn’t be happier with my new driveway!"

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Yes, including patterns, finishes, and plant integration for aesthetic enhancement.

Yes, to build a retaining wall, a permit is required. Similarly, any repairs or modifications to an existing retaining wall require permits. If the planned wall measures higher than 4 feet, most municipalities require designs and permits come through a licensed engineer. In some locations, if the wall is shorter than 4 feet, a permit may not be required. For the requirements in your area, contact your local government.

To maintain the integrity of your landscape, a retaining wall must be installed if the slope of the angle exceeds 35 degrees. The lean of the wall must be 1 inch per 12 inches in height to disperse the weight of the soil uniformly and guarantee the correct drainage of the soil.

Poured concrete is often the cheapest material for a retaining wall, costing around $6 to $8 per square foot. Other budget-friendly options include vinyl and landscaping timbers, which range from $10 to $15 per square foot; landscaping timbers are particularly well-suited for DIY projects. Untreated timber and railroad ties are a step up in price, starting at $15 to $25 per square foot. Natural stones can also be a cost-effective choice if you can source them from your own property, but they can be expensive to purchase. High-end materials like steel are typically the most expensive but offer superior durability and aesthetics.

Each design is different, so we can’t say definitively if you’ll need a dedicated drainage system in place for a two-foot retaining wall. However, you can likely skip the drainage, as this project is typically served for walls that are 4 feet tall or more. Even with a relatively low wall, consider drainage if you are building on top of clay or poor-draining soil types or if there are buried water sources nearby, like a well used for other outdoor garden projects.
