"During the height of the summer deluges, Roofer Mike found time to come to our aid. The expanse of roof he had to replace was much larger than we had imagined. Mike handled all permits, walked (actually talked) us through the process, completed the work in a timely manner given it was the rainy season making repairs difficult. Would absolutely call him again for roof work.

"The company reps and workers were very professional and very respectful. They were careful when they had to enter my momâ s home before during and after the repairs and they were extremely careful walking on the tile roof. We are very happy with the service. The team arrived exactly when they scheduled. They finished promptly and there were no surprises. I highly recommend Top Shield Roofing."

"I am writing this to compliment Florida Roofco, inc. on their professionalism and the excellent service that your company provided in the repair of my roof. Cost estimates were up front, no surprises. At the end of each day, the job was left clean and tidy. From the onset of the repair, everything was addressed. My questions and concerns over the detail of the repair were answered. I would highly recommend your company to others. Thanks again. Sherry S."

"I cannot say enough positive things about Pro-Tech Roofing. Our roof inspection was great but we had some broken Spanish tile that needed to be replaced as soon as possible. I was contacted by 2 other companies and they felt the job wasn t big enough so they simply couldn t be bothered. I was ready to be told the same thing only to be pleasantly surprised. Gretel responded quickly and was incredibly professional and very kind. She asked me what the time frame was I needed the job completed by and I advised the sooner the better. She told be she would have two roofers out on Monday morning (my call was made on Friday) between 8:30 and 9:30 and that no job was too small. I advised that there were maybe 4-6 broken tiles but there were actually 8-9. They removed and replaced the tiles flawlessly and placed the new tiles in their place. She contacted me within half hour of their departure and Lazaro provided before and after photographs as well as a detailed report of the work completed. I recommend Pro-Tech Roofing contractors without any reservations. They are incredibly professional, kind, detail oriented and their response time and promptness was refreshing. Working in the legal profession, time and details are so important. They checked off all the boxes and made it so easy and transparent. A true pleasure to have dealt with Pro-Tech Roofing."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

If you’re building the roof trusses yourself, which isn’t recommended, it will be more affordable than buying pre-built trusses. Trusses cost more because they use the same amount of material, but you’ll also be paying for the labor, as well as the delivery to your home. However, if you’re having a contractor build the roof for you, then trusses will be less expensive, as the labor costs to build roof framing on-site will cost more.

Gaps between tiles are necessary to help with weatherproofing, allow for thermal expansion, and increase wind resistance. In general, a small gap no larger than 3 millimeters wide will encourage proper drainage and limit cracking. Beyond that, tiles should overlap a minimum of 3 inches, except at the eaves where they should extend to the center of the gutter.

The green coloration that develops on copper roofs is called a “patina,” and it’s a result of mild oxidation on the surface. The oxidation process is not harmful to your roof. In fact, the surface corrosion acts as a protective layer and won’t spread to the core of your copper roof materials. The discoloration will progress much more quickly in damp or humid climates than it will in dry climates. If you don’t like the green color, you can seal your roof to preserve the shiny, rose-gold look.

Yes, moss can be dangerous for your roof if left in place to grow without treatment. The moss soaks up and holds moisture. Having a constantly damp roof could lead to problems with rot for the parts of the roof that consist of wood. Additionally, a patch of thick moss may draw insects and birds, which could damage the roof. Thick moss could block the roof’s drainage system. Water then may back up after a rainstorm and cause further damage that could eventually lead to roof repair expenses or the cost of roof replacement.

Once framing is complete, you will need the following materials to roof a house:

  • Wood sheathing

  • Drip edge, a.k.a metal flashing

  • Underlayment for waterproofing

  • Roof covering, like metal or asphalt shingles
