"We had a great experience with Cool R Us. Our first contact was with Josh, who arrived at our home on time and completely prepared. He was very personable and truly professional, and quickly put us at ease. He asked questions to see what our priorities were and explained what his recommendations were and what each particular HVAC unit would do for our home environment. There was no pressure to decide immediately and he quickly sent us an online quote for all of the units that he recommended for our needs. Once we decided, we were given a very fair price and the installation was set up to accommodate our schedule. The installation technicians let us know they were on their way. They arrived and worked quickly and efficiently to remove the old unit and install the new one. These gentlemen were also very personable and professional and obviously, very knowledgeable. When installation was done, they did a complete clean-up and left our home spotless. Adem helped us to set up our digital thermostat and explained how to use the thermostat, which was one of our major concerns. He assured us that an answer to any questions we had was only a quick phone call away. After our first day of using our new unit, the humidity level in our home dropped appreciably and the air felt so much cleaner. We are very pleased with our purchase and highly recommend Cool R Us."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

To diagnose a bad HVAC or AC damper, assess the airflow from your vents. For a manual damper, close it, run your system, and check for airflow. If air is still coming through the vents, the damper is likely faulty and needs repair or replacement. For an automatic damper, turn on your HVAC system and monitor the airflow and room temperature. Signs of a problem include low airflow, a room that won't maintain its set temperature, or a drafty feeling. If you suspect a faulty automatic damper, you may need to hire a professional for repairs.

When deciding whether to repair or replace your air conditioner, several factors should be considered. It is generally worth repairing the unit if it's less than 10 years old, the warranty is still active, and you're dealing with a one-off issue. Most central AC units last about 15 years, while window units last 8 to 10 years. If your unit is approaching or has surpassed the 10-year mark and requires frequent or costly repairs (e.g., over $5,000), replacement is often the more sensible long-term investment. For older, inefficient, or out-of-warranty units experiencing multiple problems, replacing it is typically the better choice.

There are many recognizable symptoms of AC compressor failure. They include loud banging noises, hot air being continually circulated in your home despite running the AC at full blast, uneven airflow and cooling, and electrical issues like constant surges due to the compressor working overtime. While some of these symptoms, like uneven cooling, can have other root causes, they are common indicators of compressor problems.

Whether an HVAC damper should be open or closed depends on the season, the zone it controls, and the temperature in that zone. In the summer, open upstairs dampers and close lower-level dampers to get the most efficient cooling possible. In the winter, do the opposite. Cool air will naturally flow down to lower levels, while warm air will rise. This keeps your system from working harder and helps prevent common AC problems.

Yes, it’s important to turn off your AC sometimes to give it a break and prevent it from freezing up. If your AC runs all the time, your system’s parts will wear down quicker, which may mean that you need to replace it sooner. Plus, using your AC constantly uses more electricity and leads to higher energy bills.
