"Arthur was a pleasure to work with. Great communication and always returned calls or text messages. Knew his business and did everything he said he would. Had his son as an assistant who was also a pleasure and helpful to Arthur, installing thermostat and keeping the job site in order. I would highly recommend Arthur of Lars air conditioning to anyone looking to replace or repair their air conditioner or heat pump units."

Customers say: True professional

"Our dryer indicated a flow problem even though we had only been in our new built home for less than a month and this was a brand new LG dryer. My husband read the reviews and at nine pm he contacted Breathe Easy A/C and received a return call almost immediately. The next morning our tech, Austin Foley, arrived and the problem was found very quickly. He went on our roof and found that the builder had not taken the cap grid off the vent! Nothing was getting through and the backup was very scary. We could have had a fire in no time, not something you would expect in a new built home. I watch my infant grandchild and the thought of a fire due to this small preventable thing is horrible. No pressure from this company at all but we decided on our own to do preventative measures and hire this company each year. Hopefully we can have Austin every time."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

To make the most out of your AC, consider implementing the following best practices:

  • Choose the right size AC for your home to ensure your unit runs as efficiently as possible.

  • Choose a window with shade, as direct sunlight can cause your AC unit to overheat.

  • Clean or replace the filter at least every two months.

  • Inspect the AC’s fan and straighten it if necessary.

  • Discontinue use immediately if you suspect a malfunction, as running the AC while broken can lead to significant issues.

  • Turn off (or adjust the temperature) when you leave the house.

If you’re trying to buy a new AC unit, there are a few crucial factors to consider. Look at the cooling capacity, the available warranty, the energy efficiency, and the type of unit. A ductless unit will cost more up front but may be a more viable option if you don’t already have ductwork. Additionally, a unit with better energy efficiency will cost less to run overall, saving you money on your monthly energy bill.

Yes. Return air vents are responsible for gathering and pulling in the warmer air. Once they draw it in, your system conditions the air by removing the warmer molecules from it, allowing your air conditioner to dispense the cooler air back into your home. Not only does this create a more comfortable environment for you, but it also keeps your air conditioner from overworking, resulting in lower energy bills.

During the summer, it’s best to set your AC to 78 degrees when you’re home and awake, according to the Department of Energy (DOE). For better energy efficiency, raise the temperature slightly to 85 degrees while you’re out of the house. The National Sleep Foundation advises lowering your thermostat to between 60 and 67 degrees when you’re asleep.

Don’t run your AC with a wet filter. It can cause your AC to work too hard, which will run up your utility bill and cause extra wear and tear on the system. You could also spread moisture and mold throughout your house. Turn off the AC, remove the wet filter, and check for cracks or clogs. Fix the problem (with a pro’s help, if you need it), and put a dry filter in place before you turn the system back on.
