If you don't clean your AC evaporator coils, dirt and debris will build up, which impairs the system's ability to transfer heat. This forces the unit to work harder, leading to inefficient performance, higher energy bills, and frequent breakdowns. Over time, neglected coils can corrode, which may cause refrigerant leaks, or develop mold, ice buildup, and a clogged condensate drain, resulting in poor air quality and an uncomfortable home.

While an air conditioner can temporarily run with a dirty filter, it is not recommended as it will not work efficiently. A dirty filter forces the system to work harder to circulate cool air, leading to reduced airflow, increased wear and tear, and higher energy bills. The best way to reduce heat upstairs is to release it by opening a window. Hot air rises, and if you can create some airflow by opening a window upstairs and also one on a lower level, the hot air should be pushed out of the home. Remember that fans pointing out the window do a much better job of circulating air than fans pointing into the home.

Condensation forms when warmer, outside air combines with cooler air in your ductwork. This can happen when there are leaks in your air ducts, your HVAC system has a dirty air filter, or there’s a lack of insulation around the ducts. To prevent it from happening, replace your HVAC filters as directed. Also, once every five years, hire a local air duct cleaner to clean and inspect them.

Here’s how AC professionals will clean your AC coils:

  1. Unplug the AC unit or turn off the breaker to the unit in your circuit breaker box.

  2. Remove the faceplate.

  3. Spray a vacuum hose attachment or compressed air can to remove debris, dust, dirt, and grime.

  4. Use a soft-bristled fin comb to remove stubborn caked-on debris.

  5. Use the vacuum hose to suck up any extra debris.

  6. Take a coil-safe cleaning solution and spray it onto the coils. Try to choose a no-rinse solution.

  7. Let the solution sit for at least 15 minutes.

  8. Gently wipe away loosened grime and debris with a microfiber cloth.

  9. Reattach the faceplate, plug in your AC system, or turn the breaker back on.
