"Absolutely fantastic service! Gene was extremely prompt, professional, caring, and thorough. I could tell from my first meeting with him that he cares about the service he provides and the trees that he works on. He is not only a licensed arborist, but he also keeps up to date on research and tree care techniques. The turnaround time was very quick. The team that came out was professional, efficient, and quick. He has the best equipment and an arborist on site during the work. Gene also came out to make sure instructions were clear."

"We have many large oak trees on our property and in the 15 years we have lived here, we have hired many tree services. This one was a rather daunting job involving very large oak trees with large limbs that were damaging our chimney cover when the wind was blowing. These guys were fast, thorough, had the proper large equipment and the clean-up was outstanding including blowing off our whole roof and cutters which we did not even ask them to do. The owner is an arborist. If you need tree service, you need not look any further than Proper Cut Tree Care - they live up to both names - Proper Cut Tree Care!"

"I’ve used MJ Family Tree Service multiple times now, and they’ve done an excellent job every single time. They’re always professional, on time, and the quality of work is top notch. Most recently, they trimmed a large tree over my driveway and did an amazing job. They were very careful with the work, cleaned everything up thoroughly afterward, and left the area looking great. It’s hard to find companies that are this reliable and consistent nowadays. I highly recommend MJ Family Tree Service to anyone needing tree work done."

"Michael Greenlee and his team are very professional. Michael and others on his team are firemen, so I was glad to do business with them. They removed a massive oak tree near my home and some other trees. Their quote was very competitive. They gave me the arborist report (necessary for government) and completed the large project very fast. Cleanup was perfect. I will use this company again!"

"The owner called in a timely manner and made arrangements to view my site. Completed the work the next day. Our house backs up to a lot of trees so future business. Very customer focused and offered advice on some fertilizer for my palm trees. Will definitely have them back in a few months to do additional work. And a couple of years when I have the entire surrounding trees trimmed back from the house."

"Mike, the owner was very personable and straightforward. We had a storm-compromised laurel oak removed, and a large queen palm that had been decapitated during Milton also removed. We chose not to have the stumps ground at this time. They also trimmed 2 additional live oaks whose branches were hanging very close to our roof and pool screens. Mike was very skilled at bringing down the large laurel oak, which was very close to, and hanging over a newly repaired fence. The fence was miraculously unscathed, as was the pool screen. We will definitely call Mike again if we need other tree work done."

"Chris, the owner, was gracious, and very knowleadgable - and top-notch experienced in this line of work. He was trustworthy in handling a huge task as ours - we had two very large trees removed by another company , but the entire stumps were not well done. Therefore, we had to hire a proficient master like Chris to tackle the job. This company is "thumbs up" all the way. I am definitely spreading the word that this is the very top best to deal with. Thank you Chris! ---Mrs. B -"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

It’s not always easy to tell when a tree is dying, although signs like dropping branches and brittle bark can sometimes offer clues. It can also be difficult to know whether a tree is dead or dormant, especially if it’s a deciduous tree. You’ll want to wait until a growth season to get a good idea of a tree’s health. When in doubt, contact an arborist for a consultation.

The recovery time for pruning depends on how much you prune, the species of tree, and how well you care for it afterward. All trees grow new wood and often sprout additional branches after pruning. Ideally, trees should recover from normal pruning after one or two years. Heavy pruning or slow-growing trees may take several years to fully recover.

Sometimes, knowing when you need tree-trimming services is straightforward, and other times, you have to do some investigating. Some tell-tale signs that you should have your tree trimmed include:

  • A poorly-formed tree with unruly branches, which makes the tree appear odd-shaped.

  • A tree with tall or large branches that interfere with power lines or your home’s exterior.

  • A tree that provides too much shade in the yard due to branch overgrowth.

In some states and municipalities, you will need a permit to remove a tree on your property. In many cases where permits are required, a tree must reach a maximum height before a permit is required to remove it. You can either ask your local building department or a tree removal professional if you’ll need a permit. If you do, you can expect to pay between $50 and $150 for the permit alone. Your tree removal company should pull the permit for you and include the permit fee in your total.

Pruning a tree is a yearly DIY job that involves removing small dead branches, leaves, and blooms to help the tree grow bigger and stronger. You can often complete the job with basic home gardening tools. Trimming a tree, however, removes larger sections to control the direction the tree grows in and protects your home, utility wires, and yard from potentially dangerous branches.
