Below is the original review that was completed before Amtek showed their professionalism and concern for customer satisfaction and corrected the situation.

Original Review:

I think Amtek is a victim of their success.  I have a service contract for my AC, and in the past all my dealings (cleanings, etc.) were very satisfactory.  On October 24th my electric bill that was almost 4 times higher than normal.  Florida Power & Light verified that I had a surge at my home that lasted more than 24 hours.  As a result, the AC compressor was not going off; the surge had probably burned out the thermostat.  I ordered a new Honeywell programmable thermostat from Amazon (on sale from $100 to $55).

I contacted Amtek, explained that I had an electric surge and that the compressor was not turning off.  They scheduled the service call, then tried to reschedule late in the day when the technician was due.  Technician came out, checked the system and verified that the thermostat was fried.  He refused to install the new thermostat I had purchased because it was not purchased from Amtek. Since I was stuck, I had little choice but to agree to have them install a new thermostat from their stock - $225.

The technician was new and did not seem to be very knowledgeable about the electronics of the air handler system - he failed to identify a resistor in the air handler electronics.  Luckily my neighbor is a mechanic, was there to explain the electronics in the air handler to the technician and suggested the technician test the resistor.  The technician stated that was a good idea and my neighbor showed him how to test the resistor.  it was fine.

The Amtek technician did determine that the motherboard on the air handler was also fried, but never noticed that, as a result, the heating system was operating and would not shut down.  The technician informed us that replacing the motherboard would cost $785 and recommended a whole new system for $5,250.  When asked about the possibility of just replacing the air handler rather than the entire system, the technician stated that would void the 10-year warranty on the AC system.

I decided to get a second opinion, paid the Amtek technician the outrageous $225 for the thermostat and called Boyle AC, a local company near my home that also carries Rheem.  We did not tell Boyle the information we had been given by the Amtek technicia.  Boyle came out, verified that the old thermostat had been bad, inspected the new thermostat and reinstalled the new thermostat because the Amtek installation appeared shoddy with lots of extra wiring.  Boyle also verified that the air handler motherboard was fried and Boyle determined that the heating system was staying on as a result, causing a big increase in electical usage.  Boyle replaced the motherboard and charged me a total of $175 for the service call, diagnosis, fixing the thermostat installation, and installing a new motherboard in the air handler.  The system is now running great.

"Joe came out due to a moisture problem in the shower wall & identified water damage. He opened up the back of the wall & found the leak. He had it repaired by a plumber. Completed paperwork for insurance and placed de-humidifiers in the bathroom without charging us anything. Upon hearing that the insurance company was being difficult, he helped us find a public adjuster who is currently helping us. Joe is always available to help us with questions and responds quickly to messages."

We have been a Service America Customer on and off since 1998 and have always received satisfactory service on our appliances and AC system. In 2012 we purchased our retirement home and a few months after we purchased it our AC system went bad. We replaced the whole system (under their advice and discounts) with a brand new Rheem high efficiency system. Since its installation in March 2013 we have had a few issues which they have come out relatively quick and made the appropriate adjustments to the system.

Just recently on a Friday evening we had an issue with a drain line which backed up and shut our AC system down. Fortunately their technicians have shown me how to drain the line and restart the system which worked  however the system wasn't cooling down so I called them and was assured there would be service on Saturday to check the problem I was also told to call Saturday morning to confirm the appointment. I decided to reset the system which started cooling down again. I called on Saturday morning and was told 1st there was no appointment scheduled and if I wanted service it would be an after hours call for a cost of $105 trip charge. When I questioned this I was told that this was not considered an emergency with temperatures soaring in the 80's at 8pm at night. My wife has early stages of Emphysema so these kind of temperatures are detrimental to her health. The supervisor I spoke with was totally unsympathetic to the situation so I told her to forget it and I would figure something out. I was not willing to pay a $105 service charge for something I already pay for which is by the way under a 3 year warranty with them.

Saturday morning came and around 10am I received a call from a customer service supervisor who wanted to know what the problem was which I explained. Since the system was now operating properly the emergency had since passed but he arranged for a tech call on Tuesday morning between 8 and 1 to completely check the issues with this system and why the condensation line was backing up the way it is. At that moment in time it somewhat restored my faith in the service contract I pay for. With all of the appliances people own in South Florida the most important is their AC system. To get a normal service call from these people is usually a 2 day wait with no consideration for emergency or health conditions. Their answer is to be put on a priority to get service within a reasonable time you have to pay above your contract. This is not right or fair.

Service America rates a "D" when it comes to providing service on a timely basis.

"The sales gentleman was new and inexperienced. However, he was professional and he requested the sales manager and general manager to come to my home to answer questions and provide me "piece of mind" in purchasing this expensive heat pump. The "shining star" of this whole process was the installers! This was a team from A-Bear air conditioning and the team leader was a gentlemen by the name of Willie. He was awesome!!! He was very professional, fast, informative and always went the extra mile. My Carrier-two stage heat pump works great."

"I just DIY installed my brand new ComfortStar 12,000 BTU 20 Seer 2 last night in my car garage. The installation went well and the mini split was impressive in quietly & quickly cooling a 2 car garage. The next morning the cool from the AC got warm. There was a leak throughout the night and by the afternoon when no cool air was given. I starting looking online to find R410A frigerant to pickup near me. I found out that R410a is to be discontinued with the exception of ordering online…with delivery time & no immediate replacement. I reached a few local HVAC techs but appointments were a day or two later. Adrian Cooling & Heating LLC’s & Arlet answered my distress call. A few hours was all it took with a friendly & knowledgeable tech to diagnose, refill refrigerant(2lbs) & checked to make sure no leaks. Bravo, an amazing rescue and my much needed work to be done in my cooled garage is very appreciated. I have all good praises from the reassuring phone convo w/Arlet & Adrian Cooling & Heating’s competent tech! I will only consider them if in need. Absolutely high regards & recommendations with my entire experience and shockingly fair in service fees. My Pop’s assumed “Emergency” fees would double or triple…refrigerant fee was the only invoiced!!! Thank you so much! Rouel"

Install Boiler questions, answered by experts

An expansion tank must always be installed on the supply side, which is the side where the boiler sends water out to heat the systems. That placement allows the water to push against the air and condense properly as it is heated, then circulated through the system. Professional installers can recommend the best place on the supply side for an expansion tank.

Overall, heating your home with an oil furnace tends to be less expensive than heating your home with an electric heating system. Oil heating systems stay warm for longer periods of time without drawing a constant electrical current to maintain a temperature. Plus, heating oil systems typically have a longer lifespan and lower price tag than their electrical counterparts, resulting in short- and long-term savings.

Yes, most municipalities require a permit for propane boiler installation to ensure safety and code compliance. Permit fees vary by location and are often included in your installer’s quote, as they’ll handle the permitting process. Ensure that you always check local regulations before starting your project to avoid fines or delays.

Common problems include leaks, low pressure, and inefficient heating. Regular maintenance prevents many issues.

No, boilers and water heaters are not interchangeable because they serve different primary functions. Boilers are used for central heating systems, providing hot water or steam to heat your home. In contrast, a water heater's purpose is to supply hot water for daily household use, such as for faucets and showers. A water heater alone cannot supply the warm water or steam needed for a central heating system.

While they are not interchangeable, it is common to have both a boiler and a water heater. In fact, a conventional boiler often works best when a water heater system is already in place. The two systems can be combined to provide both heating and hot water, either by pairing a boiler with an indirect water heater or by installing a premade combination boiler-water heater unit. For home heating, some homeowners may also opt for a furnace instead of a boiler.
