Customers say: True professional

"We called Steve and Jerry to provide an estimate to install a Siemens electric vehicle charging station in our garage. They were prompt and their estimate, which included running wires through the attic to install a new 220 plug in the garage and mounting the charger, was less than a competitor who specializes in installing these chargers. We asked them if they could install it right away and they agreed. The two worked together to install it in just the right place, took care of the wiring, added a breaker to the fuse box, and did a great job. We would definitely call again."

"Guy Jr arrived on time and was very Professional and an all around nice guy. He installed 2 ceiling fans for me, replaced a few light switches and also an outside outlet that I could not get to work. He also looked at my inside and outside breaker panels to make sure everything was up to date. I will be calling Top Dog Electric again for my next round of electrical needs as I just bought this house and I am doing work to it little by little."

"Competent installer arrived and finished installing two ceiling fans in as short of a time that I would have never expected..he knew exactly how how to piece together the fans taken from the box and their hookup was . In addition to fixing two electrical outlets (separate from the fans), the time in took was just a fraction over one hour. Cleanup of boxed debris, old ceiling fixture, and floor debris was done without my asking. I had questions about the fans I selected from Home Depot and the company's owner was available when I called him and extremely helpful as to what I should purchase to suit my needs. The final invoice arrived the next morning; the cost was exceptionally fair...there is no doubt that J.R.Electric will be my electrical service source for all future projects."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Yes. You can connect your home back-up battery to a generator with its designated charger. Be sure that the output of the generator matches the input requirements for the battery for best results.

A 1,500 square foot home will likely need a 15kW to 20kW generator. When deciding on whole-house generator size, add up the total wattage of the devices that you’d like to continue running during a power outage. That way, you can ensure you purchase a generator that can power your necessary appliances or medical equipment during an electrical emergency.

Whole-house generators can run continuously for extended periods, even for weeks at a time (around 400 to 500 hours), as long as they have a sufficient fuel supply. However, this type of extensive use will increase wear and tear and can shorten the generator's overall lifespan. During long periods of operation, it's important to check and refill the engine oil as needed, potentially as frequently as daily depending on the model. If your generator uses a fuel tank, ensure it is kept full to prevent unexpected shutdowns.

No, you should never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet in your house. This practice is extremely dangerous, often illegal, and can cause "back-feeding," where power from the generator flows back into utility lines, creating a life-threatening hazard for utility workers. It can also damage your home's electrical system, including appliances like pumps and HVAC fans. If the main power is restored while the generator is connected, it can destroy the generator and cause an electrical fire. To safely connect a generator, you must use a professionally installed transfer switch or an interlocking kit, which prevents back-feeding by disconnecting your home from the utility grid before the generator provides power.

Portable generators provide backup power for essential appliances during outages and are easy to relocate.
