"Klaus, owner of Resolute Electric, showed up initially to complete the estimate. Klaus was on time, professional and left us feeling we chose the right guy for the job. Klaus provided an estimate within 24 hours, we scheduled the date of the installation and Klaus arrived exactly when he said he would be there. He was very knowledgeable about what needed to be done, did not hesitate to get started and completed installing the flood light in exactly the area we wanted and removed power to the base board heating at the junction box. The flood light needed to be hard wired and Klaus was nothing less than stellar from the moment we met him to the time he left after completing everything we requested. Resolute's pricing is very fair and anyone that uses Resolute will 100% be satisfied with the price and work performed."

Small jobs welcome

"Had two EV charging stations installed at my home in Middletown and I’m very happy with the work. Everything came out super clean and professional. He explained the entire process clearly and walked me through everything step by step. I got a few prices before hiring him and he was also the most affordable. Great work, great communication and fair pricing. I would definitely recommend Elite Electric Solutions. Definitely getting him back in for some recessed lighting and routing some wires for my audio and camera system. Jorge is definitely my electric from now on!"

"We hired Jim Lockhart to design and construct our old run down screened porch and make it into a 3 season porch. Jim used excellent communication skills and computer technology to design, explain, and show pictures of the finished product. His 40 plus years of experience were evident when he went over the progress of the project. Cost factor of the project was reasonable and fair. He also, put in two new storm doors and did and excellent job selecting and installing the doors. Jim and his crew go out of their way to make you satisfied. They take great pride in their work and do and excellent clean up job. I highly recommend Jim. His quality of work is as if he is working on his own home and would treat your home as if it was his. Jim and his crew exceeded our expectations. Jim and his crew showed honest communication and trust."

"Hired BAM to replace multiple ceiling Fans, install and wire appliances and update outlets in our kitchen and laundry rooms. From initial contact to project completion, I found BAM to be professional, friendly, and polite. Before he takes on a job he thoroughly goes over what needs to be done without “mansplaining” or talking down to client, as some contractors have a tendency to do to women and which I have personally experienced in the past. So happy I found BAM and look forward to working with him on future projects!"

"VMA Electric did an amazing job with installing a new electrical set up for my washer and dryer relocation. Nick Sperduto was kind, professional, prompt for appointment times and thoroughly completed the project and was very neat and clean. He also supported me in moving my washer and dryer to their location. We had an issue where the plumber damaged the electrical work that Nick did, and Nick responded and had the new work completed within 24 hours. I was blown away at how quickly he was able to help us fix that issue and got my washer and dryer operational! I would HIGHLY recommend Nick and this company for all of your electrical needs or projects. Whether they are simple projects or complex project we will be using Nick in the future for all our needs."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

While diesel is relatively stable, it won’t last nearly as long as propane and you may have to replace it if it sits unused for too long. Diesel can sometimes struggle to work efficiently or start engines during especially cold weather, so it’s not the best choice for every climate. Compared to fuels like propane and natural gas, diesel generators tend to be noisier and create more exhaust, which isn’t always ideal for home use.

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

If you’re deciding between a solar battery versus a generator for the best backup power solution, you can take a few factors into consideration. Solar batteries are quiet while generators can be quite loud. Generators have a lower up-front cost, but they require fuel and ongoing maintenance while solar batteries are more expensive but don’t have many ongoing costs.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

A portable generator can supply power to selected appliances and circuits in a home, but it's generally not designed to handle the entire household's electrical needs simultaneously. Portable generators have limited wattage capacity, so they are only designed to power essential devices and electronics temporarily until local power is restored. If your power needs outweigh the capabilities of a portable generator, consider installing a whole-home generator instead.
