"Colby was very efficient and professional with his work on our house. He cleaned the gutters, cleaned up some yard waste and did some Junk removal. He also did some tree trimming and shrub removal. The house looks great. Great guy, would hire again!"

"I couldn’t be happier with the work done by Edge & Ivy! They completely transformed my yard and did it all for an amazing price that beat every other quote I received. The team was professional, efficient, and clearly knew exactly what they were doing. They showed up on time, communicated every step of the process, and left everything looking spotless! My yard looks better than it ever has, and I’ve already gotten compliments from neighbors. Highly recommend to anyone looking for reliable outdoor work without breaking the bank!"

"We have been using Chris for 3 years. Chris and his crew are professional and take pride in their work. We asked Chris to look at some damage a fiber optic company did and repaired. Chris came out immediately with no questions asked. We are so happy we have Chris and his crew for landscapers. Terry & June"

Small jobs welcome

"Pikes Peak Tree Care provided exceptional service from start to finish. Cole arrived promptly to remove our two large cottonwood trees and did an outstanding job. He skillfully took down the trees, removed the stumps and all surface roots, and left the area spotless. The site looks fantastic, and we couldn't be happier with the service provided. We are beyond impressed and highly recommend their services!"

"Great work done in a timely and affordable manner. Appreciated that the arborist actually walked all the trees with me and explained why I shouldnâ t trim as aggressively for both the health of the tree and the look of the finished tree. They also offered additional landscaping that was a great price but mulch is crazy expensive and not in the budget this year."

"The estimator arrived promptly when scheduled and provided a written estimate. We thought it was a bit expensive just to prune a tree but decided to hire them because: (a) we were unhappy with a different tree service's work we had used years before, (b) their city permit was up to date (according to the COS website), (c) they had insurance and offered to provide proof, and (d) mostly because they had satisfactorily removed a 50 foot cottonwood tree a year and a half earlier (although our cedar fence sustained some very minor damage from a falling branch, the supervisor immediately stopped work and brought the damage to my husband's attention, offering to repair it).
Based on the care that was taken before, we decided to hire Horton. We were surprised when the actual "arborist" arrived - late, claiming he was a tree doctor in a different country and turned our leafy tree into a "horticultural poodle". The main branches were stripped of small sprouts while leaving plumes of leaves at the ends. I was furious when I returned home in the evening to see most of the already thin canopy cut away.
I am not an arborist or even an experienced gardener ,so I hoped this was a trimming style that would take time to appreciate. It is not. The weight at the end of the branches resulted in many of them snapping off in high wind, especially weakened by the drought conditions. After 2 years and high hopes, I still have a tragic looking tree that I will have to pay someone to try and trim again and hopefully save. So, if you have a dead or dying tree, they were good at that aspect of tree service. Would I hire them to prune another tree? Absolutely not."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Generally, avoid trimming trees in the summer (with the exception of pruning fruit trees as needed). Trees use a lot of energy in the summer, most of which is relegated to new growth. If you chop it too early, you could stunt the next season's growth. Again, when in doubt, do some research based on the specific tree type.

You can use herbicides to prevent roots from growing without killing the tree itself, however they must be used with caution. Systemic herbicides are absorbed by the root and can kill off problematic roots. However, herbicides can sometimes negatively impact nearby plants, so the solution is best used sparingly.

The depth of tree roots depends on the species. Trees like oaks and maples can have root systems that grow down 20 feet or more. However, trees that grow in shallow soils will have roots that go only a few feet down. Research how your tree species grows in your climate area to estimate root depth.

Most experts recommend removing a tree that has sustained more than 25% loss in the limbs, trunk, or circumference of the bark. Doing an initial trimming of damaged and dangling branches, but then waiting a few days of monitoring to decide how much more you might need to cut can help you better assess the total damage to the tree. However, consulting a tree maintenance pro to make this determination the best course of action before removing a tree.

Pruning trees during the summer can be a bad idea because the new growth will take place during the hottest months of the year, which can stress your tree out. Similarly, pruning during the early fall can be a bad idea, too, because you’d be stimulating new growth when most trees are aiming to go dormant.

Pruning recommendations will vary by the type of tree, but generally, waiting until winter to prune your trees is a good idea.
