Small jobs welcome

"We hired Wise Tree Service, LLC for fire mitigation at our cabin outside Westcliffe. We were quoted a fair price, and we were extra happy they were able to do this job while we were on site. The crew was nice, professional, and efficient. They were done in about 4 hours, and did a great job! That made the price even better. If we need tree service again, we know who we'll be calling!"

"Forrest did not come in with the lowest bid but sometimes that little extra cost can give you peace of mind. The quality of the work and professionalism of this company was topnotch. I have a 120-year-old home and was concerned about windows and landscape being damaged. But they did a great job taking care of my home and were extremely knowledgeable arborists. I had some very high mature trees, and they were very skilled trimming these. They even went above and beyond to haul away some old branches and debris from the vacant driveway next door. Everyone there was polite and professional. I would definitely hire them again. My only issue - and it was a small one - was that I paid cash but had to wait a few days for the receipt."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Carefully pruning small roots no thicker than three inches in diameter won’t harm the tree. However, cutting larger roots may impact the tree's stability and nutrient absorption. It's advisable to consult an arborist or tree care professional to evaluate the root's size, the tree's health, and the potential impact of cutting. Proper tree pruning techniques and timing can minimize damage, but larger root removal may necessitate expert guidance to avoid compromising the tree's overall health and stability.

You can remove a small tree from your yard if there’s space for the tree to fall, you have the right tools and safety equipment, and you follow a clear plan of action. You’ll just want to follow the steps above carefully, and ideally, you will have experience doing similar tasks. If you have any doubts that you can do this project safely, though, you should hire a pro.

A tree growing close to a house can pose several risks, but removal isn't always the only or best solution. Potential problems include roots growing into the foundation and causing structural cracks, branches damaging the roof or promoting moss growth, and debris clogging gutters, which can lead to water damage. Trees can also provide access for pests and encourage mold. However, a small, healthy tree may not be a problem, and for larger, established trees, strategic trimming can be a cheaper and more beneficial alternative to removal. It is generally recommended to take action for trees within 10 to 20 feet of your home, especially if they are unhealthy or encroaching. Your best bet is to consult a professional arborist who can assess the specific situation and provide expert advice.

For trimming trees, your best tool is a pair of pruning shears or loppers. Both options work best for branches that are under 3 inches in diameter. Trimming trees with a larger diameter may require a robust tool like a small chainsaw or a handsaw, so take into account your tree’s diameter when deciding between tools.

If a disease has attacked and destroyed the roots, then the tree may fall over as soon as it has died or while part of it is still alive. Trees that die with their roots left in place tend to stay standing for much longer, but those roots will decay eventually, allowing gravity to do the rest.
