"My insurance company said that my roof needed replacement. I contacted roofers from Angi list. One said without looking that based on the year the existing roof was put on I did indeed needed a roof. He sent a brochure and left it at that. When I called Dave Wakins, he came the same day to inspect the roof and said the roof indeed needed replacement due to hail damage and was able to find the date the hail storm came through. He took photos and prepared an insurance claim. The claim was thorough enough that there was no debate with the insurance company. My tenants were on vacation and I asked Dave to replace the roof while they were gone, just over 1 week from the first contact. He was done by the requested date. Dave supported me each step of the way both in the roofing and filling out insurance forms. He made the process as painless as possible. Dave demonstrated superb customer service"

"We interviewed 6 companies recommended by Angi's List and Bone Dry Roofing won out. On time, professional, and great communication. The bid was reasonable and fair. We were able to choose several dates to start the work and the work was complete as described. We also had them touch up the paint on our fascia, during their work day. Overall, very satisfied!"

"Don came by to do an estimate the day after we called. He did a thorough job crawling around the attic to assess the work that needed to be done. He even told us that we didn't need some of the work we thought we did, and saw other things that needed to be added -- at a price that was LESS than our original estimate!! Heartland worked with us to find the perfect shingle, then proceeded to do the work in a timely, professional manner. We recommend Heartland for all your roofing needs and would definitely hire them again."

"We had siding. roofing, gutters, windows, trim and paint damage to our home. I wasn't sure who to trust. I was referred to Greenslate Roofing and Siding by my neighbor down the street who had them on their roof as well. Joe the owner and his team over at Greenlsate were fantastic easy to work with, they kept me informed of the steps, set expectations and followed through, on top of that we got a great finished product. Greenslate has me as a life long client."

"Salvador showed up right on time for the estimate walkthrough. Quoted my price and was able to schedule and complete my **remove and replace roof project** one week after my HOA approval was received. He stands by his work and did not take payment until the work was 100% complete and passed final city inspection. I have already recommended Excellence Roofing and Construction to others."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Once framing is complete, you will need the following materials to roof a house:

  • Wood sheathing

  • Drip edge, a.k.a metal flashing

  • Underlayment for waterproofing

  • Roof covering, like metal or asphalt shingles

You can replace a roof in the winter, though it’s not the most popular time to do so. The biggest drawback of winter roofing work is the weather. Snow and ice make for dangerous, slippery working conditions. Plus, shingles can only be installed in temperatures above 40 to 45 degrees.

The best time to replace a roof is in the spring or fall when the weather is mild. However, you can likely save some money by booking the job in the winter off-season, when roofers have more availability.

16-gauge galvanized steel staples with a minimum crown of 15/16 inches or 24 millimeters are occasionally used to install shingles. However, most shingle manufacturers or residential building codes don’t recommend staples as a roofing fastener. Roofing nails are preferred in most cases, especially in areas that get a lot of heavy wind.

The cost to replace a roof typically ranges from $8,700 to $22,000, with a national average of around $9,200. The total cost depends on the size of your roof and whether you need a full replacement or can simply place new shingles over the old ones. A full replacement, which is necessary if the roof is several decades old or has multiple layers, is more expensive. This process involves tearing off the old roofing materials, inspecting and repairing the underlying structure, and then installing the new roof.

Torch down roofing is only one of the options available for your home. Depending on your type of roof, if it is a gable or hip roof, torch down roofing might not work for you due to the slope. Asphalt, metal, and clay shingles are just a few popular roofing options that may be more suitable.
