"I needed two ceiling fans installed that were pre-wired with the correct ceiling fan rated boxes. I left a voicemail and sent an email to Patrick. He responded in a timely manner and I liked how he detailed anything that could cause the price to deviate from the original quote. Patrick arrived 15 minutes early the next day and was very customer friendly. I would recommend him to friends and family. I will use him again for the next ceiling fan install in my other bedroom."

"They found a problem with the humidistat that was preventing the duct fan from turning on. All I was charged for was the $29 visit fee. The previous contractor that came out said we had a bad fan motor and humidistat (which they kept calling a thermostat - red flag) and quoted us $1500."

"Prior to hiring Topshelf to install a wholehouse steam humidifier I spoke with several companies. Darrell responded quickly, was knowledgeable and willing to explain and answer all my questions and concerns. His team arrived on time, introduced themselves, followed Covid safety measures, put shoe coverings on everytime they entered my house. When the installation was completed, they made sure I knew how to operate the system. No trace of them was left behind only a house that now is humidified and overall much warmer with a lower temperature setting. I would highly recommend this company!"

"Don was great. He even tried to fix the old fan before installing my new fan (and he put the new fan it together for me). MIghty Bee is coming back next week to install the attic fans."

"Joel installed a ceiling fan on my porch. Although he incurred some unforseen obstacles , he held to the original scope and cost of the projects. Hard to find contractors with ethics. He did a fantastic job and I couldn't be happier."

"Came in time slot given, very professional. Put up one indoor and one outdoor ceiling fan where there were none. Look great afterwards. Noted the 10 can lights on my deck were not rated for damp spaces and offered to replace them with damp rated LED lights. Fair price for all the work done. Feel better about being in code. Finished up in good time. Cleaned up. Brought my outside outlets up to code with covers. And fixed one of my broken electrical sockets while they were here. Definitely would use again."

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

Ceiling fans require periodic cleaning of blades to avoid dust accumulation, checking screws and connections for firmness, and occasional lubrication for components, keeping the fan running smoothly and quietly over time.

Ceiling fans can be a great way to cool your home without the expensive utility bill of running an air conditioner. Plus, ceiling fans can sometimes run in both directions, pushing hot air down in winter and pulling cold air up in summer. With that said, air conditioning might be the only thing that helps if you live in a very warm climate.

If the fan doesn’t have a switch, connect the white wire from the ceiling to the white wire from the fan; connect the green wire to the ground wire; connect both black wires; and connect both blue wires. If yours has a switch, the white and green wires are connected the same way. However, connect the ceiling’s red wire to the light’s black wire and the ceiling’s black wire to the fan’s black wire.

The direction your ceiling fan spins helps create comfortable airflow in your home and can also help cut down on energy costs.

During summer, your ceiling fan should spin counterclockwise. This will push cooler air downward in a column and help lower your room’s air temperature. In the winter, set your ceiling fan to spin clockwise and at the lowest speed setting. This will pull cool air upwards, displacing the warm air that pools towards the top of your ceiling and bringing it down towards the floor.

The square footage of your room will dictate the correct ceiling fan blade size. For example:

  • Rooms smaller than 75 square feet require a fan that is 29 to 36 inches.

  • Rooms up to 175 square feet require 42- to 48-inch fans.

  • Rooms up to 350 square feet require 52- to 56-inch fans.

  • Expansive spaces over 350 square feet need a fan larger than 60 inches.
