"We had a TRULY excellent experience with All About Electric. They installed 3 ceiling fans (2 on vaulted ceilings), 3 cans, 5 LED lights and multiple outlets, all in one day. The work was very high quality, they were knowledgeable, on time and thoughtful with installation options. There is not a single thing I would change about this experience. On top of that, I felt their rate was more than fair. It is not often you run across a company this good, I would and will HIGHLY recommend them to my friends!"

"Brandon with Red Fox Electric did a fabulous job for us. He was always prompt, respectful, and informative. He explained the problem in detail, provided two alternative solutions, and justified his recommendation well. The solution required replacement of all of the 120 V breakers, and after completion, the panels look so much better, are easier to understand, and safer because of his work"

"I am giving a C-rating, when an F is probably more appropriate, due to not great customer service and the fact that I ended up spending much more money than was necessary because of the rude woman who schedules appointments and answers the phone. They get a score of C because ultimately what I asked the electricians to do, they did. I am writing this to make sure anyone who considers this company is well aware of the issues. The electricians were good, but there were problems with the job that I have outlined below. The job: I had two ceiling fans I wanted replaced. I bought two new ones and the electricians did install them and haul out the old fans. The job was completed satisfactorily. History. About two or three weeks ago I started detecting a burning smell coming from one fan when the light was on. I searched Angie’s List for an electrician and chose MightyBee. The woman who answers the phone is rude. I told her the problem and she couldn’t get me off the phone fast enough. She said it was more expensive to find replacement parts than to just buy a new fan. It was clear she didn’t want the job. I am moving, I’m in a time crunch, and I finally decided it would be easier to just buy new fans than to try to find someone who could fix the one with the burning smell. I have a sort of master suite setup with two fans, so they have to match. Replacing just one fan was not an option. The fans I had are no longer produced. I did not intend to call MightyBee again, but I did accidentally. Same rude woman who answered the phone the first time I called. I have no idea what is up with this person. It’s like calling to schedule an appointment just ruins her day. Anyway, I went ahead and scheduled. Same reason as before. Time crunch. MightyBee has this A rating and I figured: how bad can it be? Day of appointment. This is a REALLY, really low-tech company. No appointment reminders, no text messages, no emails, no call ahead to let you know they’re coming. I got an appointment window and that was it. Next thing I know, the guys are at my door. It’s snowy, dirty and mucky outside from a recent heavy snowstorm. They came in, shoes CAKED with ice and dirt. They walked onto my clean hardwood floors without even enquiring if it was okay first. I asked if they had shoe covers. No. I have white carpet upstairs where the fans are, and the carpet had JUST been cleaned. They did remove their shoes, which is fine, but it was inconvenient for them since they had to keep going outside to the truck. Why would any company who does work in people’s homes not provide shoe covers? Unbelievable. As I said, this company is really low tech. While working on the ceiling fans, they spread the parts out on my clean white carpet, including the old dusty fans. No drop cloth. This really bugged me, but the carpet survived, so all’s well that ends well, I guess. Turns out, the burning smell wasn’t the fan at all. Wasn’t electrical. It was the transformer for the remote control for the fan I’d installed years ago, and the transformer had malfunctioned or burned out. This is an add-on part, not part of the fan. If they had come out in the first place to take a look, all they had to do was remove the remote-control transformer and install a new one. That was the only problem with the fan. Basically, the rude woman on the phone cost me $800. The cost of 2 new fans and the installation. If the two electricians had not been nice and done a good job installing the fans, I would have given the company an F because of the rude woman who answers the phone and the fact that she doesn’t give two hoots about helping you with your problem. The electricians are fine. Very nice. Good at what they do. Really accommodating guys. For them, the company gets a C."

"I cannot express how happy I am with the team at Tipping Hat Plumbing, Heating & Electric. My house had Aluminum wiring in it and I called around looking for a team of people to rewire the entire home in a tight time restraint. Justin came out to do the estimate work and explained all of the options that I had. He was very professional and treated my home as his own. Justin and his team (Kurt, Devin, Zeb & John Jr) worked diligently to ensure the entire project was completed on time. The team treated the house with respect and would ensure that I was satisfied with everything before leaving. Some highlights of the teams performance are below -Covered all furniture with tarps to ensure they would not get dirty -Wore boot covers to protect my floors (wood and carpet) from getting dirty -Vacuumed and swept the areas that they worked -Informed me well in advance to any power outages that I would have during the project time -Worked outside in a blizzard to complete the job before the time limit -Shoveled my walkway when it snowed while I was at work -Gave recommendations on what I could do in the home (Adding outlets for wall mounted tvs, adding lights above the shower that was previously dark, installing ceiling fans) which were all included in the budget. - Took the time to answer any of my electrical questions and they were more then happy to show me what they were doing. Once again, I cannot express how happy I am with the team that worked in my home. I will definitely use them for any future projects I have in my home and would recommend them to anyone looking for work."

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

Hiring an electrician to install a new ceiling fan may be the best course of action. Installing a ceiling fan requires basic electrical and mechanical knowledge. It also requires holding it up with one hand and in an awkward position, making the installation even more difficult. If you’re uncomfortable with these circumstances, your best bet is to hire a professional.

For a 12x12 room, a fan between 36" and 50" will work, as it falls in the range for spaces up to 144 square feet. These size fans provide adequate air circulation and ensure a comfortable environment without being overpowering. Even better, they come in a broad range of styles, offering aesthetics and functionality, making them suitable choices for maintaining an ideal room temperature and enhancing overall comfort.

To determine if your ceiling box can support a fan, you must check if it is specifically fan-rated. Manufacturers are required to indicate this on the box itself. You may need to remove the existing light fixture to look inside the ceiling box for an inscription stating it is rated for fan use. If you do not see this confirmation, the box is likely not strong enough and must be replaced with a fan-rated junction box. For a proper and safe installation, you should also use a fan brace to secure the new box between the ceiling joists, which provides the necessary support for the fan's weight and motion.

If the fan doesn’t have a switch, connect the white wire from the ceiling to the white wire from the fan; connect the green wire to the ground wire; connect both black wires; and connect both blue wires. If yours has a switch, the white and green wires are connected the same way. However, connect the ceiling’s red wire to the light’s black wire and the ceiling’s black wire to the fan’s black wire.

Many ceiling fan-rated electrical boxes tend to be made of metal. However, some electrical boxes may also be made of heavy-duty plastic that is reinforced with metal support structures. It may also have an attachment that connects directly to a ceiling joist. If you are ever ensure, consult with a licensed professional to get their insight on best practices and whether the installation is a safe one.
