"Amazing professional! Ryan built custom french doors for our foyer, and without doubt, is the best finish carpenter I have ever dealt with. Always on time, meticulous in his craftsmanship and goes the extra steps to provide a beautiful finished project. I find it so refreshing that he works with you on the smallest details and his vision of the completed project was in sync with ours; his expertise made the project result even better than we could have imagined. He custom mills the lumber for your project and the end result is a one-of-a kind, high quality product both you and he can be proud of. The sign of a true craftsman is when he is pleased with what he gives you; it's not perfect until Ryan is happy with the finished product. We will use him again."

"Marco and his team framed my entire addition, installed a 30 foot long beam, built and installed the roof, and installed multiple large sliders and picture windows. Always on time, always did what he said he would. Kept everything very clean and cleaned up after. I can not recommend him enough. 10/10!"

"Needed trim replacement over my carport. Joel at Green Light was very responsive to my request. He made a site visit and explained what he needed to do to complete the project. He and his crew arrived on time and with the supplies they needed. They were professional and thorough. The project was completed on budget and clean up was impressive. "Classy Closets was recommended to us by the company that remodeled our master bathroom. Sean Ireland brought samples and photos to our home to help us decide what type of installation we wanted in our closet. He took measurements and then provided a couple of different sets of CAD drawings for us to choose from. He provided updates to the drawings in a timely manner and helped us to make cost-effective choices. Sean worked with us to schedule the installation to coordinate with the work in our closet. The installers arrived promptly and completed the job as scheduled. The resulting closet is beautiful. The workmanship is excellent. Our closet is oddly shaped and all the cuts/carpentry fits exactly. The drawers and doors operate beautifully and the aesthetic is just what we wanted."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

There are both temporary and permanent ways to enclose a carport. If you’re looking to enclose your carport for the winter, a canvas enclosure could do the trick. It won’t be as protective as a permanent structure, but it can offer some protection from elements like snow, rain, and wind. For a permanent enclosure, you can add extra walls, add a new vertical roof, or a lean-to addition on one side of the structure.

Duration varies by project size, but average-sized homes typically take a weeks.

There are a few easy ways to locate a wall stud without a stud finder. First, try knocking on the wall with your knuckles. Most parts of the wall will sound hollow, but when you tap over a stud, it will sound more solid. Alternatively, since studs are spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, you can measure those distances from a corner of the room, which will always have a stud.

Most Cape Cod houses are two stories tall at the peak, although they’re considered one-and-a-half stories tall because the steep roof pitch cuts off a portion of the living space on the second story. Unless you raise the roof on your Cape Cod house to add a dormer, the interior rooms upstairs will lose some usable living space to the sloped ceilings.
