"My wife and I have worked with Hastings Construction for over 20 years. Justin has completed work, both on simple and complicated projects, including new construction, remodels and repairs, both for us and for many of our clients. On each of those projects he and his team have exhibited a high level of experience, expertise and professionalism. Theyâ re also all very nice people; itâ s a pleasure working with them and having them in our home. Justin is an excellent communicator, and is always available to his clients when challenges arise during the completion of a project; he always returns phone calls/texts within a few hours, and most often does so â immediatelyâ . One recent example to show how Justin goes â above and beyondâ to ensure his clientsâ satisfaction: Justinâ s team installed a Generac generator at our home in October 2022. The unit worked as expected during the early part of the storms/floods we on the Monterey Peninsula experienced in January 2023, but then failed. It simply would not start, or generate electricity as designed. Once it failed, we made immediate contact with the Generac customer service department, which proved both immediately and over the next three months to be entirely unresponsive and untrustworthy. Their goal from the very beginning was to deny responsibility for the failure, which they ultimately did. We made dozens of phone calls to the customer service department and left dozens of voice mail messages, as did Justinâ s project manager (initially) and Justin (once we had utterly failed to get any meaningful response from Generac). During that same time period, we experienced more than a dozen PG&E power outages at our home, and were â left in the darkâ , without a functioning generator, during all those outages. Finally, in mid-March 2023, after more than three months of us living with a brand new but failed generator, Justin made the â high roadâ decision to purchase a new generator and deliver/install it at our house, all at his cost and at no cost to us. He hauled away the failed generator, and we understand he plans to continue to attempt to urge Generac to stand behind its product. We have on many occasions in the past recommended Hastings Construction to friends and clients, and obviously will continue to do so in the future. They are a first-class, reliable business."

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

The average cost to replace a septic tank or install a new system is typically around $7,350, with a broader average range of $5,000 to $12,000. However, total project costs can vary widely, from $5,000 to as much as $22,500. Key factors influencing the price include the size and type of the septic system, the tank material, and the size of your house.

It's important to distinguish between the cost of the tank itself and the cost of the entire system installation, which is significantly more. For the tank alone, costs vary by size:

  • A tank for a one-bedroom house typically costs $500 to $900.

  • A 1,000-gallon tank, suitable for most one- to three-bedroom homes, costs between $900 and $1,500.

  • A tank for a five- or six-bedroom home generally costs $1,200 to $1,600.

A well pressure tank is located between the well and the well pump, and it stores your water under pressure so that the well pump can eventually do its job. The well pump is activated whenever you turn a faucet on—it pulls the water from the tank into your home. Both are vital parts of a complete well water system.

Yes, it is generally okay to oversize a well pressure tank, and it will not harm your well system. The primary advantage is that a larger tank reduces frequent pump cycling, leading to longer, slower cycles with fewer startups. This can result in less wear and tear, potentially increasing the lifespan of the pump and conserving energy. However, there are drawbacks to consider. Oversized tanks have a higher upfront cost and require more physical space. While not necessarily a bad thing, opting for a tank that is appropriately sized for your well is often the most efficient choice in terms of cost and space.

Yes, shower water goes into the septic tank. Shower water is a type of greywater, and in fact, all water used in a home with a septic system—including water from sinks, toilets, the dishwasher, and the washing machine—drains into the tank. When shower water enters the tank, debris like soap and hair travels with it. The solid debris sinks to the bottom to become sludge, while soap residue joins the scum layer at the top. The remaining water is treated in the tank before moving to the drain field for further treatment and dispersal. It is important to avoid putting oil or harsh chemicals down any drain, as they can cause clogs or disrupt the beneficial bacteria required for proper wastewater management in the septic system.

There are many potential causes of low well water pressure. The most common include sediment buildup, leaking pipes, a failing well pump, or a cracked pressure tank.
