Epico Systems is locally owned and based in Watsonville, CA. We have been in business in Santa Cruz county since 2004 with a Class A business license. We are preferred contractors with AT&T, City of Santa Cruz, Cabrillo College, and the City of Watsonville, as well as completing work for various local business and property owners. We have crews experienced in utility installation, tree trimming, concrete forming and finishing (including sidewalks, walkways, and pads), asphalt road repairs and asphalt driveway placement, retaining walls, concrete walls (trash enclosures, propane tank enclosures), landscaping, fencing, and septic/ sewer lines. Our equipment includes mini excavators, skid steers, compressor trucks, dump trucks, and boom truck for placing large objects,. All of our vehicles medium duty trucks and smaller which allows us to street park and fit into driveways as needed without taking up too much road space and blocking parking access to surrounding properties. We have the expertise and equipment to complete each step of the project from start to finish and everything in between without the need of multiple different subcontractors.

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Yes. A metal detector is one of the quickest and easiest ways to find your septic tank. However, metal detectors can be too expensive (costing upward of $300 in some cases), and not everyone has a metal detector just lying around. If that’s the case for you, you can also take a long metal rod and poke it into the ground at regular intervals until you hit something—likely your septic tank lid.

Depending on the severity of the freeze and the method used, thawing frozen underground pipes can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Applying heat directly to the pipe using heat tape, infrared lamps, or hot water jetting can speed up the process. However, patience and careful monitoring are key to avoiding pipe damage.

No, a ditch isn’t a trench. A ditch is an open, relatively shallow channel that’s carved out of the ground and used for drainage purposes. In contrast, a trench is a deeper excavation that’s entirely underground. Trenches have many uses, including gas lines, sewage systems, and electrical wiring. Unlike trenches, ditches don’t get filled back in with dirt after they’re dug.

Trenching is not the same as boring. Boring uses a drill to make a tunnel for underground utilities, but trenching involves digging with an excavator, trencher, backhoe, or shovel. Boring is more precise and expensive, and it’s best for installing utilities underneath buildings, roads, and bodies of water. Trenching is simpler but can cause more disruption to landscaping and ecosystems.

How deep your septic system needs to be into the ground depends on several factors. In extremely cold environments, the tank needs to rest below the maximum frost line, which can be up to six or eight feet deep. The standard burying depth for most systems is between a few inches and four feet below ground level. Depth can also depend on the slope of the landscaping and other property variables.
