"Mr. Deshwal helped us with the architecture and structural engineering in our home remodel project. He helped us with the permit process and getting our designs iterated and approved with the City of Sunnyvale on time. He also helped with an addition of the master suite. He is very knowledgeable and helpful. We had several changes in our requirements along the way, and Mr. Deshwal was very flexible and supportive. We are very satisfied with his work and highly recommend him"

"There was good communication among all members of the team, especially with Daniel, our project manager. When we had issues, he went above and beyond to get them resolved, weather it was product resourcing or dealing with unexpected issues. We had a good idea of how our final project would look like because we had 3D drawings from their designer who, also assisted us in procuring all materials prior to the start of the project. We were very happy with the quality of the workmanship, especially because the previous contractor had done such a poor job on our bathrooms. The quality standards of the B&B team are superior. As far as timeliness, our job was delayed because of product delays but would otherwise have been completed on time. We are absolutely happy with our bathrooms and with the job that B&B performed."

"I located Gary on Home Advisor and was impressed with all of the positive reviews. We scheduled a personal meeting. I found him to be attentive, thoughtful and patient in reviewing my needs on a kitchen remodel. I felt no need to interview other architects. This project has been completed, and I am so thrilled with the end result."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

If you’re building new construction or adding onto your existing home, hiring a structural engineer is not only worth it but it’s probably required by your local building department. Structural engineers will ensure you aren’t making your home unsafe in the building process, which is crucial from a safety perspective but also a legal one. It’s also worth hiring a structural engineer if you’re making changes to structural components, like removing a load-bearing wall.

The 10 10 rule describes the formula most contractors use to determine how much to charge for a job. Allowing for 10% overhead above the total projected cost to do the work and 10% profit sets a contractor up for success, even if there are delays or other problems on the project. This formula isn’t a hard-and-fast rule, but it is a ballpark figure to begin with when estimating your expenses on a job.

Stone, marble, and brick are common building materials of Neoclassical architecture, though you will also find wood flooring and a range of natural stone tiles. Since several home styles fall under Neoclassical architects' umbrella, a range of building materials—including traditional wood framing—will make an appearance.

The essential difference between an architect and an engineer is that architects typically focus more on the aesthetic design of buildings, although not without consideration for the structural integrity of the building. Engineers focus more on the structural, technical, and practical aspects of whether and how an architectural design can be built as drawn. You may need to hire both types of professionals if you’re designing and building a new home.

Structural engineers typically conduct inspections during a home sale or renovation, looking for signs of structural damage in various structures throughout the building, such as load-bearing walls, joists, beams, roofing trusses, foundations, and chimneys. Some of the warning signs that structural engineers check for include:

  • Dry rot

  • Infestation

  • Shifting or cracking foundations

  • Erosion

  • Water damage

  • Sagging, shifting, or damaged walls, ceilings, or roofing support
