"Jon Butcher did a wonderful job on a rather large front yard. He eliminated the sorry grass, added two sizes of rock, a walking path and plants to accentuate the rest of the yard. He also redid the watering system. If you throw grass seed on bare spots, some may sprout on the soil’s surface. However, the germination rate will diminish over time because the grass will not be rooted correctly. You may not get desired results if you toss grass seed on bare spots without proper lawn maintenance and cultivation.

While it’s possible to grow grass seeds by throwing them down, this isn’t the best way to plant them. By amending and prepping the soil beforehand, you’re providing optimal contact between seed and soil for a better chance at germination. If you throw them down without preparing the soil beforehand, seeds are more likely to blow away, get eaten by hungry birds, or never grow.
