"The firm ran into scheduling difficulty and was unable to make it at the original appointment time, but they gave fair warning and we agreed to an appointment the next day with no hard feelings.  The tech arrived on time for the second appointment, was personable and solicitous (he put on shoe coverings), and I proceeded to ask him his opinion regarding leaky faucets in the bathroom. His suggestion was that the calcification in the existing faucets and their overall condition made replacement a far better option than repair, and he quoted me a very reasonable per sink labor cost, with the assumption that I obtain some new faucets.  This is a minor setback, but I'd willingly employ this firm for that work, when my wife and daughter (the design team) can select some hardware for that bathroom.
The larger issue, and the reason I wound up requesting a refund of the Big Deal of 50 dollars for 100 dollars worth of plumbing labor, is that I still have not received any written estimates from the home office for the water heater repair work, and that's something I had hoped to get done as soon as possible, so there's every chance that I will be shopping that job around.
The tech did exactly what anybody in his position would do: he made a pitch for a tankless water heating system to replace our older tank (probably not a bad idea), and he also pitched a water purification system (Halo 5) to deal with the very obvious hard water we have here.  My research on the Halo 5 has not suggested that it's truly capable of the level of softening achieved by salt systems, but we don't want a salt system for any number of reasons, so the Halo 5 may actually wind up being an attractive option.  It's not attractive enough to commit to at this point, however, and the lack of a written estimate precludes any decision-making I might wish to employ.

Update: I never noticed the provider response to my review--I guess I was a bit impatient about getting an estimate in writing so that I could try to get the problems resolved before I left town, and for whatever reason your tech left me with the impression that an estimate was immediately forthcoming.  You blame me, I'll blame him, and it really doesn't matter since Summer sent the estimate the day after this review was posted, and I accepted the proposal.

I'm not going to pretend that every single thing was rosy and delightful--the Halo 5 system needs to regenerate and dump gallons of water out into a planter every 7-11 days, and the tankless heater's ventilation takes the form of a pretty noticeable PVC arrangement on our HOA-monitored roof.  Jesse and his crew did everything possible to make these issues painless, however (painted vent PVC to less conspicuous color and routed Halo backwash away from house), and I give them high marks for minimizing impacts with good humor and patience.

The brand new Navien heater was a dud--it had a faulty check valve, and that was preventing the kitchen (only the damned kitchen) from getting hot water.  Debugging this unfortunate scenario took many hours, and it was not until the day after the tank got installed that Jesse was able to come out and prove to everybody's satisfaction that the manufacturer's suggested work-around was neither necessary nor correct.  When the manufacturer wanted to replace the valve, Jesse insisted on replacing the entire unit.  This goes beyond excellent service, by my standards, and I would happily hire these guys again.  I don't know what the rules are on Angie's List for updating grades and such on a review, and I don't much care--I'm just going to go change them."

"They had to come out 4 times. The first water heater started leaking after 6 months. It was replaced. The second water heater also started leaking after 6 months. I contacted the manufacturer and they recommended a thermal expansion tank be installed. It was not installed the first or second time the water heaters were installed. I did have to pay a re installation fee. I picked up the 3rd water heater myself and they gave me natural gas water heater instead of propane. The fourth attempt they finally got it right and so far the water heater has worked after 7 months. The guy was very responsive as far as my calls and issues. He came out whenever I needed. Unfortunately, the entire experience was just a train wreck."

"After getting a outrageous  quote from Mike Diamond for a drain to be cleared, we sent the not so smell good plumber packing and called Doc.Joe's. Sean and Bryant were on time, cleared our drain and then jetted the line to remove all the build up.
Doc Joe's cares so much about their customers, they take there time to explain the problem in detail and gave me choices. I felt no pressure. In fact before they started they provided me a detailed description on a iPad with the cost up front and a 1 Year Warranty. Very impressed with how clean they were, professional and courteous.
I also asked them to give me a estimate on a water heater. While Sean was preparing the estimate his coworker performed a service on my water heater for free! I will definitely be using Doc Joe's Plumbing again!
Oh and one other thing, before they left, my invoice and estimate was emailed right away and I paid my bill on line. Very nice feature.
Thank You Doc Joe's! See you in November for the installation of my new tank less water heater.

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

Soda, coffee, and other soft drinks are highly acidic. This affects the pH in septic tanks, causing them to require more frequent pumping. However, a vast majority of people don't need to worry about septic system disruption. Pouring out the occasional flat soda doesn’t affect septic systems to the same degree as the high-volume dumping from restaurants and convenience stores.

We’ve explained how deep-rooted plants can damage a septic tank from the outside, but plenty of things can ruin it from the inside, too. For example, flushing bulky items (like paper towels, diapers, and wipes) can clog your septic tank. Cooking oil, grease, and household chemicals can also harm your system. And since a new septic system costs between $3,460 and $11,450, it’s worth following these guidelines.

A septic tank lid is often 1 foot underground, but it could be just 4 inches from the surface or 4 feet deep. For septic tank lids that are closer to the surface, you’ll have an easier time locating them just by looking for signs in the yard or using a metal probe. But for septic tanks that are buried deeper underground, you’ll need to hire a pro with specialized equipment to track down the lid without risk of damaging utility lines.

There are many potential causes of low well water pressure. The most common include sediment buildup, leaking pipes, a failing well pump, or a cracked pressure tank.

A septic smell may be harmful because sewer gas is dangerous depending on the exposure amount and length of time. Sewer gas is made up of multiple gases, including hydrogen sulfide, methane, ammonia, and carbon dioxide. Some of these gases, like hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, are toxic to humans and can be fatal in high concentrations or long exposures.
