"HC Structural Engineering was asked to evaluate the structural integrity of an office building that was constructed in 1983 and that was upgraded after the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. Humza Chowdhry and his team were incredibly focused, understood what needed to be accomplished, completed their work on schedule, provided me with an excellent report with detailed suggestions and recommendations and they completed this project on budget. They promised a lot and delivered everything that they promised. I give them my highest recommendation."

"Due to a large crack in my ceiling, I thought I might have a structural issue. Hogan Land Services was prompt in sending someone out to take a look at the issue. After a quick inspection of the attic and crawl space, they determined there were no structural issues. Therefore, there was no need for a structural engineer. Here we are a couple years later and doors are not lined up, the crack in the ceiling continues to get longer and wider, and more cracks in the ceiling and walls. Hogan Land Services was quick to reply to my concerns, giving more information on what could be causing the issues I'm experiencing and what route to take to alleviate the issues."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

All foundations have footers, including monolithic slabs. In some cases, the foundation itself acts as the footer, as in the case of a floating slab and a monolithic slab. With a monolithic slab, the footers—which are just the bottom-most portion of the foundation that distributes loads down to stable soil—are a part of the main slab and are constructed with a single pour.

Yes. Foundation walls are always load-bearing.

The depth of any foundation style depends on your climate and how deep the frost line is, as building code requires that the footers of a foundation—which are built into a monolithic slab—sit at least a foot below the frost line. At the southern tip of Florida, for example, a monolithic slab foundation would only need to sit 12 inches under the soil at the widest parts. On some parts of the Canadian border, the frost line is 100 inches, which would mean a minimum of 112 inches, which is prohibitively deep for a monolithic slab.

The National Association of Home Builders requires repair of any foundation crack of more than one quarter of an inch, although local regulations may vary. In general, any visible crack that is growing in size, allowing water through, or that you have just noticed, is a good reason to call a structural engineer. Cracks can be a sign of a sinking foundation, so an inspection is a good idea for your peace of mind.

Provides expert analysis, ensuring safety and compliance with building codes.
