"I can not rave enough about Zoom Drain. I hope I am leaving it for the correct branch as I understand this is a franchise. I asked my service technician which location they are based out of and he said Escondido. I had a shower clogged in my house and I usually just hand snake it. My snake is 25 feet long but the clog was beyond that. I visited Angi's List and it recommended several plumbers. I got several but the most courteous was Zoom Drain. They offered to come out in the morning and take a look with a no obligation quote. They told me they did not know what it was but a service technician would come out and quote it. Sam M. came out and he arrived on time exactly at the time they said they would be here. He sent me a text 30 minutes when he was on his way. He arrived with an apprentice and they were very neat and put on booties before they entered my house. They diagnosed it and quoted me $291 to unclog it. He said they would also guarantee the work for 30 days. I was under no obligation to accept it. It was more expensive than some quotes I got via text from Angi but he was already there. It seemed like a no haggle price and I wanted to be respectful of his time. It included all taxes and fees. I accepted it and Sam immediately got tools from his van and cleared the clog. He said it was hair all clogged about 35 feet down which explains why I couldn't get it with my snake. He also put some cleaning fluid in it to clean the drains. Very quick and efficient. I sent in the email at 8 PM and he arrived at 9:30 AM. All very quick and efficient and professional. I'd highly recommend this company to anyone."

"We had been dealing with our shower slowly draining for about a week. After reading their reviews, we called California Plumbing. They used a hydro jetting machine to clear out years of buildup and our shower is draining much quicker. So satisfying!"

"Al Cyr the owner is as professional as it gets! He worked very hard at unclogging my drain that had a root mass blockage from a ficus tree. Unfortunately, he could not cut the root because it was too large and suggested a company who has the equipment to cut through the root mass and view it through a camera. Al was honest, fair and knowledgeable and I would definitely hire him again as well as recommend him."

Drain Cleaning questions, answered by experts

This depends on the location of the blockage. If the blockage is in your home’s system, anywhere in the system, it is your responsibility as a homeowner. Blockages seldom happen because of items or buildup coming from the city, which means it originates in the home. It becomes the city’s responsibility at the exact point your home’s line distributes waste into the city’s system. The exception is if the problem in your home damages the city lines.

Some homeowners use additives every month to help septic system performance, but according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the effectiveness of septic system and leach field additives is unknown. Further, additives made with organic solvents or alkali chemicals can actually be harmful to the necessary bacteria in a septic system.

A two-way cleanout can help if there’s already a clog, but the best strategy to prevent one is by not rinsing grease, oil, or fat down your drains, not flushing or rinsing coffee grounds or egg shells down your drains, flushing only human waste and toilet paper (so no diapers, period products, bathroom wipes, or paper towels), and using drain guards on all of your drains.

Sometimes, the drain is just too clogged—thanks, stubborn hair and soap scum. In this case, you’ll need a more powerful drain cleaner than you can DIY safely at home. But this doesn’t mean you have to choose a traditional drain cleaner.

You can find biodegradable drain cleaners at your local home improvement store or online for those drains that need a little more oomph

While on the hunt for a formidable drain cleaner, the best options are non-chemical clog solutions that combine enzymes and bacteria.

If the drain is frozen, the pipes connecting to the washing machine are likely frozen. If the hot water trick doesn’t also unfreeze the washing machine pipes, you can gently apply heat with a hair dryer on the lowest setting. Start at the end of the pipe closest to the faucet to prevent pressure from building in the pipes, and make sure the faucet is open to drain the water as it melts.
