"This was a complete landscape redo for our residence. The project included fencing and painting, repair redwood deck and paint, install pavers and fire pit, remove grass and install synthetic turf, large tree removal, hedge removal, destruction and removal of sidewalk and replacement with pavers, replacement of lawn with decorative rock and succulents/cactus, complete irrigation overhaul and installation of drip system, install landscape lighting. Luis is a stickler for detail and made sure the job was done right. He is great to work with and his crew are professional and courteous."

"We are very happy with our new lights, and with the service we received from Carlos. He made suggestions regarding placement, and we are very pleased with the results. When he was finished, everything was cleaned up, and looking really nice. He finished in under the estimated time as well. Would definitely recommend to a friend!"

"Our project included landscaping, as well as concrete work, and it was a huge job. Owner Kris had a tall order to communicate with his skilled workers every step of the way and he was able to inform them of all that needed to be done and when to do it. On many days Quetzal was on site at 6:30 a.m., not leaving from here for nearly 12 more hours”even though we were all suffering through a month-long heat spell. Our yard and new driveway look terrific!"

"I needed a wall-topper along the back of my property (for safety, to keep dogs and kids from jumping/falling over the low wall). Pablo of Green Island Landscape helped me pick the right materials for the job. The end result exceeded my expectations. It is durable, VERY well-mounted (they went through a lot of work to drill holes through steel and concrete to mortar-set the posts), and looks like it was part of the original design. I have talked to Pablo about other landscape design projects. He has some great ideas and I look forward to having him work here again."

"Tropical Landscape's Filemon responded promptly to our request, came to access the stairs and fencing that needed repair, and presented the estimate in a timely manner. The project was completed to our satisfaction with only a slight increase in time spent and estimate. We are very pleased with the experience and would recommend Filemon to our neighbors."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include:

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.

If you choose to leave gaps between your pavers, you can grow some ground cover plants between them for an organic feel. Look for plants such as creeping thyme, dymondia, jewel mint of Corsica, or clover.

There are some instances when you can use extra drywall in your garden. Ideally, unused scraps of new drywall are best for amending soil without the concern of additional chemicals or mold. However, drywall with paint, mold, or potential asbestos requires specialized disposal by a professional and should be kept out of your garden.

Yes, you can landscape in the rain, but you should take some precautions to keep yourself and your tools safe. Avoid using electric landscaping tools during rainfall, and don’t mow, thatch, aerate, or rake in the rain, as your tools can more easily tear out roots in the loose soil. Be careful when working on wet grass, and take your time to avoid slipping. Avoid putting in new plants before a particularly bad storm, as heavy rain and strong winds can damage or uproot plants that aren’t yet established.

You should plant trees at least 15 to 20 feet away from your house, and more if the tree will grow large and spread its limbs. Trees pose several dangers to houses when planted too close. They can litter the roof with leaves and branches, create fire hazards, make a ladder for larger pests, and even damage the foundation as their roots grow.
