Small jobs welcome

"Use these folks if you can. I set a meet with Ramiro. He was on time, masked and using good Covid protocol. He checked out an existing well for a pump installation. He did a trial run & was excellent explaining the factors he was considering before recommending I NOT go ahead with the project. Honest enough not to sell you something you won't be happy with & you don't need. That's real service. Thanks Ramiro. Bennett K"

"My wife and I bought a house a couple years ago, and became owners of a radiant heating systems installed more than 20 years ago. Tony and Damian did a great job of understanding how my radiant heating system works, what repairs were needed/what was failing, and where upgrades were needed. They replaced the pump, both expansion tanks, and the neutralizer. Additionally, they noticed the hot water tank was installed incorrectly, and the hot and cold water connections were flipped. It's amazing the system worked, and it's nice to have a system that's correctly installed (even if it's 20 years later!). Additionally, they secured the expansion tanks to the wall (now required by code), replaced the deteriorating copper pipes connected to the neutralizer with plastic (I'm sure this is code now as well), and re-routed the overflow pipes to the outside (rather than the floor!). You can't go wrong with these guys, well done, they're true craftsmen to the trade."

"Mike did an excellent job. He was very attentive to my concerns regarding the fill valve issue I've been having with one of the Toto toilets they installed. I am very satisfied with the resolution. Mike just reenforced my decions to use Valley for all my plumbing needs."

"As part of a major kitchen renovation I hired Harry to do a complete re-pipe of the all the gas lines in the house. This included increasing the pipe sizes from 3/4" to 1" and 1/2" to 3/4" to provide proper gas pressure to the new and existing appliances. He also installed a seismic shutoff valve that was required by the building inspection department. Harry knows his stuff and was easy to work with. He did a good job and completed it on time. I'm very satisfied with the quality and the price of his work and I will gladly recommend him."

"Our sewage injector pump in Oakland went bananas right after the holiday and needed to be replaced. But more than that, I already knew that the installation was very suboptimal and needed to be completely re-engineered. Sure, we could've only replaced the pump as-is but we'd be right back where we were one day. Enter Fito Plumbers who quickly responded to my first call and began rethinking the layout & piping while getting our system working until the new pump came in. A job like this is part art and part science, and Arnul stayed true to doing what was right, making my options clear with an eye towards creating a much better system in the end. I'm not a plumber, but I am a chemical engineer and he and I worked well together with a common goal. Once the project started, all of the crewmembers were friendly, polite, conscientious and hard working. In the end, we removed about 60-70 feet of unnecessary piping with far too many elbows which dramatically decreased the static head on the new pump. And by moving the tank uphill to a smarter location on a new platform they built under the house, we also removed maybe 90 lbs of water weight that the new pump has to push against. At Arnul's suggestion, we also doubled the system capacity with a larger tank so that it will last a long time with less cycling and more room for the submerged pump to operate. I have no idea what the original builders were thinking, but we now have a dependable system that my house deserves. And everything is very neat and professional appearing with the wire harnesses and straps neatly positioned."

Sump Pump Installation questions, answered by experts

To maintain your sump pump, start by checking it every three to four months to ensure it’s in working order. Clear any debris from the pit because blockages can prevent the pump from operating efficiently. You should also test the pump by pouring a bucket of water into the pit. If it turns on automatically and drains the water, it’s functioning correctly. Inspect the discharge line for clogs, and ensure it directs water away from your home. Once a year, clean the pump itself, and consider having it professionally serviced for optimal performance.

A sump pump's lifespan is typically 7 to 10 years, though the general range can be anywhere from 5 to 15 years. The specific type of pump is a major factor: pedestal sump pumps last an average of 20 to 25 years, whereas submersible sump pumps last between 5 and 15 years. While pedestal pumps are less expensive to service, they are also louder and more prone to clogging.

Several other factors influence longevity, including the pump's quality, usage frequency, and maintenance schedule. A high-quality pump that is well-maintained in a dry climate may last for two decades, while a lower-quality, poorly maintained pump in an area with a high water table or frequent flooding may fail in six years or less.

Regular maintenance, including annual inspections and tuneups from a professional, can significantly extend the pump's life. It is time to consider a replacement if your sump pump runs constantly, cycles frequently, shows visible rust or corrosion, or trips a circuit breaker. As a preventative measure, many homeowners replace their pumps every eight years. It's also worth noting that a manufacturer's warranty can indicate expected lifespan, and some home insurance policies may not cover water damage from a pump that is past its recommended replacement date.

Costs depend on pump type, labor rates, and the extent of repairs or installation needs.

You should be fine. Most high-grade grinder pumps have a 24-hour holding capacity within the tank. You can continue to use the facilities so long as the power outage does not stretch into days. In a worst-case scenario, attach a generator to the grinder pump, providing it has sufficient electric capacity.

Some sump pumps are powered by water rather than electricity. Water-powered sump pumps generally use one gallon of city water to pump out two gallons of water from its basin. Therefore, if you're looking at a potential 10,000-gallon flood, your sump pump will need to use 5,000 gallons of city water to prevent it.
