"I wish I could give a higher score than A. From the estimate process, through the HOA approval process (which resulted in at least 2 changes in the scope of the job), Walter was courteous, professional, knowledgeable and great to work with. They were here immediately after the HOA approval was obtained, job was completed in 2 days (original estimate was 3-4 days) including an additional task of caulking/painting vents on the roof. The painters themselves were outstanding - very meticulous (and I'm very picky), pleasant and unobtrusive. Their prep work was beyond my expectations (patching, taping, masking of windows/doors) and I haven't found any paint where it wasn't supposed to be. They cleaned up afterwards, put all the furniture back and generally went above and beyond. I would absolutely recommend this company - we were a little concerned because the price seemed too good to be true - compared to other estimates we received - but we went with the strength of the Angie's List profile and do not regret it one bit."

"I could not be more satisfied with Ike's business and crew in painting my unit, he gave me a much more competitive price than several other competitors. Ike's advised me of an option verses having a complete new roof job done, which in his opinion was not needed. I agreed with his findings and had him complete the rubber leak proof application which is popular in the industry for particular jobs. I saved thousands of dollars with Ike's, My next door neighbor liked what she saw hired Ike's and he completed both our units around the same time. I highly recommend Ike's, they are top notch."

"I highly recommend John Donahue and his crew for doing the expert quality work they did on sealing my roof with their liquid rubber sealer. The final texture and look were fantastic and made our roof look like new! John was a real pro in inspecting and evaluating the problems and had wonderful communication skills in explaining every aspect of his suggestions on his solution to use for a cost-effective price! The team of workers was prompt, friendly, and did great work in such a timely manner. Real pros who also did nice cleanup work after the finish of the job!!! I plan to use them again for other home improvement projects because they have been one of the best experiences I have had with home subcontractors!"

Roofing questions, answered by experts

While the terms are often used interchangeably, wood shakes and wood shingles have notable differences, primarily in their manufacturing and appearance. Wood shingles are machine-cut on both sides, resulting in a smooth, thin, and uniform product. In contrast, wood shakes are typically hand-split or sawed on only one side, giving them a more textured, natural, and rustic appearance. Due to these manufacturing differences, shakes are generally thicker, heavier, and less uniform than shingles. They are also more expensive. Homeowners seeking a more rustic aesthetic often choose shakes, while those preferring a more uniform look may opt for shingles. Both are installed in an overlapping pattern to create a durable, weather-resistant roof.

Asphalt shingles, wooden shakes, and slate or clay roofing tiles are often replaceable without having to replace the entire roof. It's possible to replace just a few shingles or tiles without much trouble in the case of wind damage or other minor problems. DIYers can perform the task in some situations. However, professional repair is always the best bet when it comes to roofing.

Roofers don’t typically replace vent pipes themselves, but they do handle the flashing and seals around vent pipes when working on a roof. During a roof replacement or repair, roofers inspect the vent pipe flashing for damage, replace deteriorated seals, and ensure the pipe is properly integrated into the roofing system to prevent leaks. If the vent pipe itself is cracked or damaged, a plumber is usually required to replace it, while the roofer ensures the roofing components around the pipe remain watertight.

Some homes, like those with flat roofs, may not have eaves at all. Some contemporary-style homes also lack eaves, although many may have abbreviated eaves to divert water and protect the walls and foundation. Homes without eaves often have specific types of gutters affixed directly to the edge of the roof to provide adequate drainage.

Rain shouldn’t come in through your ridge vents unless your vents are damaged or the rain is accompanied by very high winds. Most ridge vents use flashing or baffling to keep out rain, snow, and debris. If your ridge vent isn’t baffled, rain is more likely to enter your attic, so ridge vents with baffles are a better choice in areas with regular rainfall.
