"It went very well. Daryl's crew did a great job and finished quickly. The wall looks great and they cleaned the worksite up when they left. Would definitely recommend and I would re-hire for another job."

"I had some landscaping done over the summer by a different contractor but one thing that was overlooked in the design was proper drainage once a travertine walkway was installed. Based on the impact of the last monsoon that hit the east valley, there was a substantial amount of standing water between our house foundation and the new walkway. I met with Ravi who basically engineered a drainage system/network to get water out of our yard and direct it onto the street. His crew showed up on time and installed a series of catch basins that were interconnected. They also did some repair on the travertine that had "collapsed" due to errosion from the monsoon. The Balance crew worked extremely fast and were done in 3 days (this includes the 1st day which was a site survey along with the lay-out of the underground work to be done). Great team and Ravi was a pleasure to work with in getting out drainage problem resolved. I highly recommend this company for your landscaping projects."

Small jobs welcome

"We hired this company to excavate our empty lot in Laveen to install empty conduits and properly grade the property. They did an excellent job from start to finish. The crew was professional, punctual, and very knowledgeable about the excavation process. They completed the trenching for the conduits efficiently and made sure everything was placed correctly. The grading was done with great attention to detail, leaving the property level and ready for the next phase of construction. Communication was clear throughout the project, and they kept the job site clean and organized. I truly appreciate their hard work and would highly recommend them to anyone needing excavation or grading services."

"Very Well. We can’t say enough about H-Bros excavating! When we approached Marcus to come bid on our job. We were impressed. He seemed to know what he was talking about and told us we would need a D6 or D8 cat to rip all the rocks from the area we wanted flattened. He said he could probably get it done with a D6 and quoted it for that. He ended up bringing a D8 which worked out great since it could rip the rocks a lot faster. To our delight we got done 2 days early. Marcus and team started the job on schedule, were on time each day and worked hard and long hours. They were very professional and very personable. They wanted to make sure that they did the job exactly how we wanted it done. Customer satisfaction was very important to them. They went above and beyond our expectations and we are extremely happy with their services and would recommend them to anyone! They were a pleasure to work with and very honest. Do not hesitate to call them for your excavating needs! They may be a newer company but they are worth it!"

"I hired Nick after another excavator no call no showed. Nick was able to step in and get me on his schedule in a few days. Communication between Nick and my GC was excellent. Rough grade on the site, trenching for foundation and sewer lines. Everything was done on time and on plan. No hesitation to recommend his service."

"Called various electricians and found no-one willing to do the installation without scaffolding, which would add $325 to the job or a special ladder adding $250 to the  job for just the equipment.  Found White Brothers, who have a perfect size ladder for the installation with no additional charges.  They were courteous, prompt, and professional from start to finish.  Would use again, and plan to for another job after the holidays.  Glad to have found them.

"Read about Thornton Plumbing on your website and read some of the comments others had written in their reviews. Ratings were high, so I thought I would give them a try. Called the office and was told that a serviceman could be out before noon that very day. I sure was pleased to hear that! So, we scheduled the appointment... and then I waited. And waited... Shortly after noon, I called the office again and was assured that my repairman was finishing up his job and would be arriving soon. Just about an hour later, Neal, one of the owners, arrived to solve my problem. I explained that I needed a new valve for my dishwasher, my garbage disposal quit that morning and I needed the new one installed and also my new dishwasher needed to be installed. He took all this in and in a very professional manner proceeded to do all the work I had requested. I was very impressed with the quality.... Neal went out of his way to be sure everything worked... even had to get an additional part for my dishwasher so it could be installed! He inspected the pipes under the sink to be sure nothing leaked after all the work was completed. He was very thorough and I am happy to say I have found my Plumber! I was a bit leery about some of the comments others left in their reviews regarding lack of communication, not showing up on time..... but you have to know that once they arrive, the quality of service they provide, the professional way the work is performed, and the fun personality of Neal... well, it's worth the wait! I would not hesitate to recommend them to my friends and neighbors... and will definitely call them again if I have any other plumbing issues!"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Landscape edging is more DIYable than trenching. You can DIY your own digging projects, but proceed carefully and only with proper knowledge of the equipment and appropriate safety measures in place. Keep in mind the project's scope and estimate how long it will take you to do it on your own. While you can certainly save money by DIYing home improvement projects, you can’t exactly hide an unfinished—or worse, ruined— landscaping job from the neighbors. It’s always safer to call an excavation pro near you to get an estimate.

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.

Trenching is a specific kind of digging. Trenching means digging a depression in the earth that’s deeper than it is wide, often with heavy machinery. Digging refers to any kind of removal of earth in order to create a human-made depression, hole, or cut in the earth’s surface. You can dig with big tools or even with just a hand shovel.

Septic drain lines (or leach lines) are typically buried between 18 and 36 inches underground, and should be at least 6 inches below the surface. These pipes are perforated and surrounded by filtering materials like sand or gravel. Burying the lines at this depth helps minimize odors and allows bacteria and other biological processes in the soil to effectively treat the wastewater. Burying lines too close to the surface can cause issues unless the soil is very compact and stable.

To locate an underground downspout, you should start by identifying where the above ground gutter drains. Look for an entry point, such as a pipe or elbow leading into the ground. Follow the surface path for signs like depressions, landscaping disruptions, or wet areas after rain. You can use a metal detector or plumber’s snake to trace the pipe underground. For deeper pipes, a professional locator tool or camera inspection may be necessary. Visual markers or utility maps can also guide the search.
