"I cannot say enough about Aaron Schwarder and Schwarder Construction. We bought a home that had not been updated since 1964. Plumbing included. Aarons crews redid both baths and the kitchen. Beautiful bright Carrera look tile, white counter tops, beadboard, wainscoting. New light and plumbing fixtures. Kitchen went from dark and cave like with fluorescent lights in plexiglass recessed ceiling thing, to raised ceiling, high end appliances, beadboard cabinets and an open to the dining room floor plan. Aaron was not satisfied with the cabinet surfaces and repainted them himself. All custom cabinets. Very important to me is the comfort level of having people working in my home. It can be awkward, to say the least. Aaron's guys are very respectful and always clean up at the end of the day, even if they are coming back in the morning. They were very careful not to let the animals escape. Recently I called the home depot pro desk with some questions about installing a new entry door and the first name they gave me was Schwarder Construction. I was raised to believe that a man's word is his worth. You can take Aaron at his word. 5 stars only because you cannot rate higher."

However, treated wood may be less durable than some other choices, like aluminum or composite railing. Though saving money upfront is definitely attractive, it’s important to remember that your railing is an investment that will continue to evolve over time. Wood is very high maintenance, so opting for another material to save money on maintenance might be less costly in the long run.

A handrail should start at the bottom step's riser and extend to the top riser, continuing slightly beyond both the top and bottom steps if possible. A good rule of thumb is from the nosing of the upper landing to the nosing of the lowest step. This extra length provides better grip and safety when entering or exiting the staircase.

Building codes require deck railing spindles or balusters to be spaced no more than four inches apart. This is to prevent small children or pets from slipping between the railings and falling off the deck. For the same reason, the railings must also be no more than four inches from the deck floor.

The proper deck step height, also called a riser, is between four and seven inches. The tread depth should be at least 10 inches. For deck stairs, go with a rise of around seven inches with a run of 10 to 12 inches. These figures are intended to improve both safety and comfort, but fully depend on the design of the actual deck. Local building codes could also mandate slight discrepancies from the above numbers.
