"Dave was the BEST to work with. He didn’t hesitate to take a lot of time to help me understand the process of adding an addition to our home, and helped us put together plans that were exactly what we were looking for. I definitely recommend ALA to anyone looking for an architect. We can’t wait to move forward with our project! -Val and Stephen"

"Evolution design worked with me on designing and addition for a 100 and 5 year old house. We worked on the dimensions of the addition Plus the materials. Evolution understood the local zoning which was amazing that they knew that. We have not started construction. And evolution can help pull the permits and I'm considering them for that as well. All in all it was a long project but it was done efficiently, working with several of the staff an the departments."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

When planning structural engineering projects in Waukesha, homeowners should consider the region’s freeze-thaw cycles, which demand deeper foundations and robust drainage. The presence of clay soils can cause shifting, especially after heavy rains. Proximity to lakes or rivers may increase water table concerns. Local building codes, setback requirements, and historic district guidelines can impact design, as can the need to coordinate with utility providers for service upgrades.

Helpful?

In Waukesha, structural engineering work involving foundation repair is especially sensitive due to the area’s expansive clay soils and high water table. Mistakes in soil analysis or waterproofing can lead to shifting or cracking. Modifying load-bearing walls in older homes—many of which feature unique balloon framing—requires careful planning to prevent structural instability, particularly during basement renovations or when addressing freeze-thaw cycles and heavy snow loads.

Helpful?

Homeowners in Waukesha are increasingly choosing open floor plans by removing interior walls and installing steel beams, especially in mid-century ranch homes. Basement finishing for home gyms, offices, or family spaces is common, often requiring egress windows and moisture control. Second-story additions and sunrooms are also trending, with many residents seeking energy-efficient upgrades like reinforced roof structures for solar panel installation.

Helpful?

If you notice wide cracks in foundation walls, sagging or uneven floors, bowing basement walls, or doors and windows that stick, it’s wise to consult a structural engineer in Waukesha. Signs like water intrusion during spring thaw or evidence of frost heave can indicate underlying structural issues. While minor drywall cracks are often cosmetic, persistent or worsening problems should always be professionally assessed.

Helpful?

In Waukesha, hidden costs often emerge when poor soil conditions require additional foundation support or drainage solutions. Older homes may reveal outdated wiring or plumbing that must be updated for code compliance. Weather delays, especially during winter, can extend project timelines. Utility relocations, the need for egress windows in basement projects, or unexpected discoveries like hazardous materials can also increase the complexity of structural engineering work.
