"This company is amazing!! I had 3 bids, and they were by far the most thorough and competively priced. The other "big boy" in town was far far more expensive and did not even fully cover the engineer plans. Gaidish started ahead of schedule...much to my delight, had it done in 4 days, cleared out things in front of walls (other competitors told me I would have to do it), and completely removed debris and swept up better than Cinderella. The crew was super friendly and helpful. I actually had a power outage that day which turned off the heat in the middle of sub-zero temperature. They called me immediately as they were concerned the pipes would freeze (the house was vacant at the time). I cannot say enough good things about this company. Get your bids if you like....but trust these guys and choose them to do the job right."

"The smoothest construction work I’ve ever had done! I LOVE my new kitchen! They were professional, timely, and very fairly priced. They listened to my input, and provided options to me that I wasn’t even aware existed. I ended up with better quality and design for the same price. The “Dan’s” were extremely knowledgeable, friendly and helpful, I cannot say enough good things. If we hit a roadblock, they had solutions ready and waiting for my approval. Most importantly, they were in control of everything. They listened to me, then handled it all, and gave me everything I wanted and more. It was really a dream makeover which I cannot say is the norm for most! I would definitely recommend and will hire them again for all my future projects!"

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

The essential difference between an architect and an engineer is that architects typically focus more on the aesthetic design of buildings, although not without consideration for the structural integrity of the building. Engineers focus more on the structural, technical, and practical aspects of whether and how an architectural design can be built as drawn. You may need to hire both types of professionals if you’re designing and building a new home.

Signs of structural damage include foundation cracks, roof leaks, bouncy floors, crumbling concrete, and cracked or leaning chimneys. Structural damage can make itself apparent in various ways, and sometimes, there may not be obvious signs. Inspect your foundation and roof annually to stay ahead of potentially serious structural problems.

A few hours for inspection, with a detailed report following in a week.

A 4-inch-thick concrete slab can support around 4,000 pounds per square foot if a contractor reinforces the slab with rebar, while that same slab without reinforcements will support closer to 1,000 pounds. For the purposes of a patio, 4 inches in thickness without reinforcement should suffice unless you’re installing heavy kitchen equipment or a hot tub on it. In those cases, reinforcing your slab and sticking with 4 inches of thickness should provide plenty of strength.

The National Association of Home Builders requires repair of any foundation crack of more than one quarter of an inch, although local regulations may vary. In general, any visible crack that is growing in size, allowing water through, or that you have just noticed, is a good reason to call a structural engineer. Cracks can be a sign of a sinking foundation, so an inspection is a good idea for your peace of mind.
