"Jose contacted me by email the day after. We made an appointment so he could give me an estimate. He was courteous and friendly and his estimate was right in my range. I signed the contract right there and was glad I did since the next night we received quite a lot of snow. Jose and his team showed up at 3:00 a.m. to plow us out which was perfect since my sister sometimes has to be at work by 5:30 a.m. I highly recommend Artscapes and will be using them for our landscaping needs in the summer too."

"Outstanding customer service. Owners of business did the work. Quality job, cleaned up afterwards, followed up a few weeks after completion of job to be sure we were happy with job done. Would absolutely hire again. Most importantly they completed the project when they said they would, quality workmanship, all for the price they quoted us,"

"Scott Brandt did a demolition and hauled away a shed and leveled the area. He showed up when scheduled and did a great job! Also, took down a tree and hauled away and cleaned up after. I would recommend Scott anytime. Fair price and great to work with."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Driveways should be sloped with a minimum 2% slope—anything lower will cause precipitation and runoff to collect. A 2% slope is the equivalent of a 2-foot rise over 100 feet. One quick way to check the integrity of your driveway’s slope: no more than four inches of water should collect on the surface longer than 15 minutes after rain.

While blacktop is a type of asphalt, the terms should not be used interchangeably, as not all asphalt qualifies as blacktop. The primary differences are in their composition, production process, and ideal applications. Blacktop contains more stone than other types of asphalt and is heated to a higher temperature during production—300°F or more—while hot-mix asphalt is heated to between 275°F and 300°F. The ratio of bitumen (a tar-like crude oil) is a key differentiator, though sources vary: some state blacktop has less bitumen, making it less durable, while others claim it has a higher ratio. Due to these differences, asphalt is generally more durable and better for high-traffic areas like highways and streets, while blacktop is more suitable for playgrounds and residential driveways. For a driveway project, it is best to consult a professional to determine the most appropriate material.

Instead of a set number of types, asphalt comes in variations designed for different needs. Some are categorized by temperature—hot mix, warm mix, and cold mix. Others are sorted by composition, like dense-graded, gap-graded (such as Stone Matrix Asphalt), porous, and mastic asphalt. There are also modified versions with added compounds like polymers, rubber, or emulsions. Instead of focusing on a number, it may be more useful to understand how contractors customize asphalt for durability, climate, and traffic conditions.

Regular cleaning, sealing, and timely repair of cracks help maintain its condition.

While paving a driveway is possible to do as a DIY project, we don’t recommend it. Hiring a driveway professional to pave it will ensure that your driveway looks neat and clean and lasts for years to come, and it will also prevent a weak driveway and, potentially, damage to your foundation. Paving a driveway requires heavy machinery, and while you can rent the equipment needed, operating it close to your garage slab or around your home’s foundation can crack it and lead to structural issues.
