Customers say: Quick response

"The team at Black Horse Masonry do excellent work. Every aspect of the job, from getting the quote, demolition and rebuilding of my chimney went without any issues (except Tacoma weather) Tara at the front office did a great job keeping me in the loop on the status of the job as we faced many rain delays. Would highly recommend."

"The Bricks Doctor came out and tuck pointed the outside of my house and chimney within 7 days. They had to replace a few bricks and did it at no cost. I have a big house so I was amazed with their timeline. They did an amazing job on my 8 ft high chimney. Their crew of 4 people finished the job with precision."

"Outstanding owner and operator of this concrete business. Rome excavated, installed rock, and finished the concrete for a pickleball court, shed pad, and extension to my driveway. Everything was done perfectly and on time. Exceptionally pleased with the work, workmanship, and the people he hired to complete a multi concrete and excavation project. So very thankful he called during my initial call for help. Excellent job and Rome leaves this project with a lifetime friend in me."

"I contracted for a walkway, short retaining wall, a planting bed and a couple other small projects. The finished products were of outstanding quality and fully met my high expectations. I know the paver walkway was built well and to industry standard. The vendor was easy to work with. When issues popped up, they were very responsive and cooperative. I competed the core job with five vendors and Thurston Turf and Paver was by far the best bang for the buck. I fully trust the jobs were one right and the vendor will stand behind their work. Cliff is a straight shooter."

"I can’t say enough about how wonderful it was to work with Heath and his crew. They took my completely awful backyard and turned it into an amazing place that I never want to leave. Heath followed through with everything we talked about and more. He has an eye for landscape design and the skill to hire people who know how to install both hardscape and plant material. He has all the equipment needed to do most anything and keeps it well-maintained. Plus he’s got some great stories to share. I would hire him again in an instant. Services included irrigation system, paver patio and path, land contouring with a bulldozer, dry stream bed, sod lawn, planting and barking flower beds."

"prompt, hard working team, thorough job including after job clean up. after the payment was made, reached out to Wu Construction for a favor - to take some pictures of the crawl space after the project. No problem, they sent a foreman to do just that. It has been a great pleasure working with them."

"STA-Built did an awesome job installer concrete pavers in an area where we put our garbage cans. They were right on time - finished my project in 1 day. The follow-up with Leland (who came out to give the quote in the first place) was there on the day of install and stopped by to follow up that day after they had finished the work. I honestly can't think of one thing that would lower the rating of 5 stars."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can do German schmear on stone. You can account for the more textured and rough surface of stone by using a large paintbrush instead of a putty knife. A brush allows you to drag mortar across the stone to get it into all the cracks and crevices. However, a brush will cover more of the surface, so you may need a wet sponge to scrub excess mortar and expose more of your stone.

While painting can certainly change the look of a chimney, you should think twice about giving your brick chimney the old landlord special.

Painting brick is porous, meaning it’s full of tiny holes that can soak up moisture. Those holes also allow it to dry, though. So, when you paint it, you trap any moisture inside, providing an opportunity for mold, mildew, and water damage.

Paint also shows wear faster than naked brick. This means that once you paint a brick surface, you’ll have to keep painting it to maintain a clean look. A paint job is also harder to undo on brick because of its porous nature. Once you paint it, it’s hard to go back without some serious power washing—another added cost.

Yes, masonry is more expensive than concrete because the labor is much more involved. With masonry, your expert will build your project from the ground up, one piece at a time, ensuring they use the proper amount of mortar or grout during construction and keeping the project level or plumb. Pouring concrete can also be labor-intensive, but it’s a bit less involved. It requires building a mold, pouring the concrete, and letting it cure. The less intensive labor makes concrete a more affordable option in most cases.

This is largely dependent on the size and hardness of the rock, but a range of tools might work, including hammers, chisels, rock hammers, sledge hammers, and more. You'll need a jackhammer for the very biggest rock-breaking jobs.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.
