"Mike was great and seemed very knowledgeable. My house and property was significantly damaged by flooding and it is a big job. I didn't get a bid for the full scope of work from Mike and ultimately decided on a contractor that gave me a bid for everything and knew personally. I looked at pictures of Mike's cabinet work and was impressed. It was a tough decision and work has not yet begun because I'm waiting on insurance. Mike was very kind which I appreciated during such a stressful time."

"We love our cabinets! They look fantastic while remaining affordable. The friendly staff at AWD helped us from start to finish. They are very knowledgeable and gave us advice and tips when needed. They were receptive and patient with our ever-changing needs. Once we finalized our purchase, we received our cabinets within two weeks! The cabinets are very sturdy and the color is beautiful. The hinges and hardware are high quality. We are extremely pleased with AWD and would recommend them to any friends or family looking for good cabinets at a fair price."

"We worked with Ali (sales manager) and Tony (project manager), who took the time to design a project that made sense for our property and our budget, made a number of suggestions and recommendations and were never pushy or tried to "sell" us on something. The crew really went above and beyond to provide top quality workmanship and overall we were in very good hands. Highly recommended!"

"This is my second review for Cox Custom Remodeling and once again I have to give them an A+. This project was an unexpected master bathroom remodel that was required when we discovered our tile floor had a large spongy spot. My husband is disabled and can only use our master bathroom. When James (owner) evaluated the situation and knew that he would have to rip up the floor, he offered to do it while we were on vacation and have it completed upon our return. Since I had past experience with James, I completely trusted him to do this. We were not disappointed. It turned out to be a lot more work than originally anticipated with several rotten floor joists and a leak discovered behind the shower. James and his crew worked diligently including over the weekend, to be sure that it was completed when we arrived home from vacation. He took pictures to show us the damage they found and kept me updated on the progress. We wound up having to replace all the tile in our large double shower and the floor throughout the bathroom. We replaced a glass bock wall with large glass panels, and we put in a new toilet and new shower fixtures. James’ crew and subcontractors are excellent and we were very happy with their work. All of the people associated with Cox Custom Remodeling have proven to be reliable, professional, and good at what they do. James always makes sure that any problems that come up are resolved to his customers’ satisfaction. He is consistently on or under time and budget. Can’t wait until we have another project we can hire him for!"

"Excellent work throughout and he was versatile. He solved problems such as rodent proofing our garage. Of special note is the work he did refurbishing the roof. He extended its life by a decade."

Closets questions, answered by experts

Plywood, MDF (medium-density fiberboard), and solid wood are all popular options for closet shelving. Plywood and solid wood are sturdy and ideal for extended shelves or heavy items. MDF is a budget-friendly choice for light to moderate storage, but it can sag under heavy weight if not adequately supported. Wire shelving is another alternative that allows airflow, making it especially useful in humid spaces such as laundry rooms or basements.

DIY is possible for basic designs. Professional services ensure proper construction and space optimization.

If you’re on a tight budget, the least expensive material you can buy for DIY closet shelves is chipboard, a.k.a. particle board. This inexpensive material is made from a pulp of sawdust, resin, and glue that’s pressed together under high temperature and pressure. As you can imagine, it’s not very sturdy and might buckle under your blue jean collection, so you should only use it if you’re storing very light items.

Fortunately, there are no hard and fast rules or regulations regarding the height of closet shelving. However, the typical height for a single closet shelf with a hanging bar is 70 inches from the floor. For a double-hanging system, use 84 to 85 inches from the floor for the top one and 42 inches for the lower.

Yes, adding a built-in or custom closet generally increases your home's value and makes it more attractive to potential buyers. A well-designed closet adds utility, organization, and a touch of luxury, which are appealing selling points. Most homeowners see a return on investment (ROI) of 50% to 60%; for example, a custom closet can add about $1,000 to your home's value on average. The specific ROI depends on the type, with custom walk-in closets typically providing more value than reach-in closets. However, to maximize value, ensure the closet doesn't significantly detract from the room's usable square footage. Converting an entire room into a closet can actually lower your home's value. Similarly, using overly lavish materials may not recoup their cost. A good strategy is to add a closet that takes square footage from a non-living area, such as a garage, to create a mudroom closet.
