"I'd had a bit of trouble finding someone to repair my central vacuuming system on Fox Island. Cascade came out in very short order, assessed the problem and cured it the same day. Very professional and courteous service. Highly recommended!"

"10 stars for this company!! I had a very small job scheduled a week in advance with another local contractor to add a central vacuum connection in my garage. The garage is being remodeled and the drywall was off, so all the job required was adding a tee connection to the current PVC central vac piping that was directly above where I wanted the new connection and running a 4-foot section of pipe down the open wall to a new inlet. The other contractor simply blew off the appointment and after I contacted him, told me that he wasn't available. I called Hide-A-Hose after finding them via a web search and the owner, Jason, could not have been nicer. I explained that I now only had a short window of time to get the additional connection put in before the drywall team was scheduled. Jason scheduled the appointment for early the next week, but told me that if it needed to be sooner to meet the drywall schedule, he'd arrange for someone to come OVER THE WEEKEND! WOW! The Hide-A-Hose techs actually came a day early, which was perfect. They were so pleasant, very professional, and had the job done in a less than an hour. My central vac unit is older and will likely need to be replaced within the next year or two. Shawn, the owner's brother, was honest and direct and advised me to keep using the current unit as long as it lasts. I already know that when the current motor fails, I'll definitely be calling Hide-A-Hose to replace the motor. It's doing the small jobs pleasantly and professionally that builds confidence for when the bigger jobs need to be done. Thanks, Hide-A-Hose team, you are fantastic!!"

Install Central Vacuum questions, answered by experts

Technically, yes, you could install a central vacuum system on your own, but it is a very difficult DIY. There is a significant amount of planning, cutting into walls, and electrical wiring work that goes into it, which should only be performed by a professional. Because of the difficulty and expense associated with a central vacuum system, it’s worth it to hire a professional company familiar with the installation's complexities.

Before deciding whether or not to install a central vacuum system, consider the pros and cons to determine if it’s right for you.

Pros

  • Increased suction power

  • Improved air quality

  • Reduced noise pollution

  • Longer lifespan than traditional self-contained vacuum units

Cons

  • Higher upfront installation costs

  • Expensive repairs

  • Requires significant storage space

Experienced professionals don’t usually need to take down drywall to install the central vacuum. They are experienced in working in the tight spaces between walls and in crawl spaces to minimize any damage. The only drywall changes should be the holes cut for the new outlets. However, home design, existing plumbing, and other factors may require some modification. An estimate from a professional contractor should include information if any changes need to be made.

The disadvantages associated with central vacuums start with cost. They are expensive to install, especially in existing homes, as retrofitting requires opening walls. The system's bulky hoses can also be inconvenient to maneuver and store compared to portable vacuums. Additionally, repairs may need professional service, adding to maintenance costs. Lastly, while powerful, they may be overkill for smaller homes or apartments, making the investment less practical for some households.

Whether talking about a whole-house central vacuum or a portable vacuum cleaner, the expected cost of major repair work should always be balanced against its replacement cost. However, excluding high-cost motor replacements or major electrical trouble, repairs on a central vacuum system are typically far less than the cost of purchasing and installing a new one.
