"We had to reschedule a couple times due to holidays and freezing weather. After a couple changes in date their tech made it out here today to clean the roof. He did a great job on the roof and cleaned up the mess down below too where everything landed on the deck. It didn't occur to me to leave the well pump on (I turn it off when I leave for work) but the tech called me and we worked it out, he was professional and had a great attitude! I'll definitely recommend him to anyone needing a similar service. There were extra charges for pitch and size above the "big deal" price so read the terms carefully to avoid surprises.

"Agron and his team were very professional, and managed to work us into their busy schedule within a week of providing us with an estimate. They repaired some rotted beams that several other roofing companies would not touch, and saved us money in the long run by replacing our roof at the same time. Agron kept us informed at each step of the way, and answered all our questions. It is obvious that he takes pride in doing the job correctly (not just quickly). He has years of experience in the Northwest, and is well-informed about how the weather here can affect a roof. We are very happy with our new roof!"

"Jim and Tom were fast, friendly and skilled.  They offered a lot of free advice to prevent future issues.  Not all carpenters will take on the smallish but nasty job of replacing rot.  But they went right for it and got it done, faster than I imagined.  And they cleaned everything up so you couldn't even tell they had been here...except my house looks much better now.  They made the repairs better than the original installation.  We will be having them back for any of our future carpentry needs.

"As usual, Emerald Coats delivered again. My deck was pressure washed and stained and the result is beautiful. The team also fixed a bunch of loose nails that made my deck creek. Thank you!"

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Your deck may look or feel fuzzy after pressure washing because the high-pressure spray tears some wood fibers as it removes the outer layer of dead and discolored wood. This fuzzy effect is a normal part of the pressure-washing process and will go away on its own in a few weeks. You can opt to spot-sand your deck if you’d like to remove it more quickly.

Applying too much sealer to a deck might seem like extra protection, but it can cause more harm than good. Wood is a porous material with a limited capacity to absorb liquids. When you go overboard with sealer, the excess can't soak in and instead forms a film on the surface. This leftover layer is prone to peeling, cracking, and trapping moisture, ultimately defeating the purpose of sealing in the first place.

Space deck handrail posts four to six feet apart. If the posts are more than six feet apart, the railing will be less able to withstand lateral forces and is more susceptible to breaking. Additionally, railing posts that are more than six feet apart may not be up to code, and you may face fines and be required to reinstall the posts to bring them up to code.

Composite decking requires a solid foundation or substructure for support. This base is typically a frame composed of posts, beams, joists, and footings. The frame can be built from various materials, such as composite, plastic, timber, or metal, depending on your budget, deck type, and environmental conditions. For maximum stability, a professional deck builder may recommend installing this frame on top of a solid concrete base. It is best to discuss the most suitable substructure design and materials for your specific project with a professional.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.
