He offered us options including a simple fix (which due to the original construction probably wouldn't last) or to replace that section of the roof with a proper installation. We opted for the proper installation and it looks great and we feel good for that area of the roof (other areas could still be a problem as he noted, but we will deal with those areas as needed). They were also great at cleaning everything up and making sure we were satisfied with the state of the yard (after some bushes had slight damage). "Jim and Tom were fast, friendly and skilled.  They offered a lot of free advice to prevent future issues.  Not all carpenters will take on the smallish but nasty job of replacing rot.  But they went right for it and got it done, faster than I imagined.  And they cleaned everything up so you couldn't even tell they had been here...except my house looks much better now.  They made the repairs better than the original installation.  We will be having them back for any of our future carpentry needs.
