"Oh my goodness. If you need a new roof, please do yourself a favor and call Right First Roofing. Patrick was the actual BEST contractor to work with. He was at our house in two hours when we found a problem. He was honest, took pictures and video to show problems and quoted us an amazing price. "The job was to tear off the old roofing on both the house and garage at our residence and replace plywood and new roofing on both the house and garage. A and S did an excellent job from start to finish. Cleaning up any messes on a daily basis and making sure tools and such were not left out in our yard overnight. Furring strips (also called wood stripping) are not always necessary for a metal roof installation, but they are highly recommended and may be required by local building codes or the roofing manufacturer's specifications. There are several key reasons to use them:

  • Energy Efficiency: Furring strips, made of wood or metal, create an air gap between the metal panels and the roof deck. This acts as a thermal break, reducing heat transfer into your home and improving overall energy efficiency.

  • Moisture and Condensation Control: The air gap allows for better airflow, which helps prevent moisture buildup and condensation under the metal panels.

  • Structural Support: They provide a solid, even frame to which you can attach the metal roofing panels.

It is especially important to use furring strips when installing a metal roof over existing shingles. Without them, the roof surface can be uneven, and you will experience greater solar heat gain.

In general, you should consider replacing your roof if more than 30% of it is damaged. This includes several missing shingles, large spots of granule loss, extreme curling or cracking, structural damage to the roof's decking, or multiple areas of leaks. All of these issues could indicate compromised structural integrity that requires roof replacement.
