"They were great, never know that there was a tree there. The only thing I would have liked would have been when I called and left a message would have been a call back sooner. Otherwise I was very happy with the work that was done."

"From management down to work crews, by far they past my expectations. I had three other company bid for a very difficult job. I have a feng shui. Garden that was around 4,000 sq ft or more of space. Grass365 was not the cheapest, Turf was great quality They had incredible reviews and lots of experience. As the old saying says, you pay for what you get and I was not taking any chances. The job came out fantastic. On the long run, the savings in landscaping/ water/ sprinkler maintenance, this job will pay it self in three years, itâ s all cruising after that! You canâ t go wrong with this outfit!"

"We hired them to till, regrade, augment topsoil and reseed a large portion of our back yard due to heavy rutting and damage caused by tree removal last fall. Too much excavation and soil work for me to do manually. Lonnie was responsive, communicated well, came without delay, brought the right equipment to do the work efficiently and without drama. Very pleased with the outcome (new grass seed has not yet sprouted but only went in 3 days ago) and he didn't damage the front or side yards while accessing the back yard. Great to find an excavator willing to take on a relatively small job and scale the equipment used for the task without "upselling" . Thanks Lonnie! You made it look easy. Glad I didn't try to do it DIY."

I have always had a passion for trees dating back to my dendrology classes at Miami University. That passion has fueled many years in the arboriculture industry as a crew leader and climber. I'm happy to consult with you on your trees or shrubs and options to explore to preserve them for the long-term. Being an ISA Certified Arborist, I'm always striving to keep up with industry standards and grow myself.

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Not all leaning trees are dangerous, but they can be a hazard as gravity may eventually cause them to fall. A key factor is whether the lean is new or has been present for a long time. Trees that have grown with a lean for years are not typically an immediate danger, but a sudden lean is a cause for concern as it often indicates weakening roots. If a tree is leaning more than 15% from vertical, you should consider having it straightened or transplanted. To be safe, it's always best to hire a professional arborist to inspect any leaning tree to assess the risk and avoid potential accidents.

In general, trees should be planted no closer than 15 to 20 feet from your foundation. For larger trees with far-reaching roots like maples, oaks, or poplars, a good guide is to plant as many feet from your home as the tree’s height is expected to reach at maturity. Some trees, like elms and willows, should only be planted far from where their roots may encounter sewer or water lines.

If you’re planning on keeping the tree, unless the roots are invasive, there’s no need to remove them, as doing so can cause damage to the tree. If the tree has been cut down and the stump and roots are left, grinding and removing the stump can cause root decay for some species. For other species, the stump and roots will need to be removed to prevent pests, disease, and possible tree regrowth.

Yes, cutting a tree's roots can cause it to fall, particularly if major support roots are severed. In extreme cases, trimming roots can affect the tree's structure and stability. Many crucial roots are located just below the soil's surface. If you make severe cuts to roots more than 2 inches in diameter, you risk impacting the tree's water flow and its ability to withstand severe winds or storms. Even cutting roots less than half an inch in diameter under or outside the tree's canopy can cut off its water supply, causing it to decline, die, and eventually topple.

We don’t recommend DIY tree trimming for a few different reasons. First, the tools required to trim a tree can be costly, up to $1,100 or more, for the ladders and specialized saws needed.

Safety is another concern, especially when working with more mature trees. As a guideline, you should only DIY tree trimming when branches are less than two inches in diameter. Any more, and the safety risk becomes too high, which could lead to catastrophe. For this job, it’s safest to let a tree-trimming professional assess the work needed.
