"One of the best contractors that we have worked with in our 13 years in this area! Our deck took 2-3 days to complete, the workers were on time, cleaned up after and non invasive (I work from home). We LOVED the outcome. We are hoping to have them do a remodel of the front porch before the Summer is out! We plan on using them for all our remodeling needs. Beautiful couple who work like a well oiled machine. I would highly recommend their services for any project you may have. - Yvette & Chris Fowler"

"All communications with the business owner Jose Sosa were through Angie's List and text message. Communications responsiveness was good. Jose discussed options with me every step of the way. Sosa is a small business, so his approach was not like a large contractor. I was somewhat uncomfortable with his approach early on, but I took a chance and am very happy I engaged Sosa for this work. Shout out to the tile installer Pedro, who did a fantastic job installing the tile. I worked with the designer recommended by Sosa. I was happy with their expertise and they had a very large inventory of tile and vanities from which to choose. I purchased the materials using Sosa's business discount. Sosa picked up the materials when necessary according to his work schedule. The bathroom was a standard single family house bathroom. We will very likely engage Sosa to remodel our master bathroom which is roughly three times the size of our standard bathroom."

"Juan and his team did a great job painting the exterior of our house and fixing all the exterior wood areas that were damaged or needed to be replaced. He even helped us remove some big bushes and fixed some of our vinyl siding pieces. His price was very fair and they worked around my schedule and completed the job in a timely manner."

"Sean Wright was always professional, prompt, courteous, friendly, and very helpful. I was not sure of some things I wanted to do and Sean made suggestions of various options I had not thought of, then talked through the pros and cons of each idea until I came up with a decision of what would work best for me and what I wanted to accomplish. This was invaluable in helping me manage the costs. The work he and his team did was excellent quality and they cleaned up every day before they left, and made it as easy as possible for me to live in the house while it was being renovated/remodeled.

The subcontractors were also good for the most part. The plumber and HVAC people were competent and completed their work in a timely manner and the pricing was reasonable. The cabinet maker was excellent. He built custom kitchen and bathroom cabinets to my design and measurements and installed them for less than half what Lowes had quoted for similar cabinets and they look great.

The electrical contractor, Kennedy Electric did good work but the price was twice what I had expected and took months longer than it should have.

I would not hesitate to recommend SLW for any size construction or remodeling job. I will be contacting them again later in the summer for some work on the exterior of the house.

"It is so refreshing in today’s market to find a company and staff that bestow such wonderful customer-focused qualities (such as effective communication, quality workmanship, professional, positive work ethic, respect, dependability, follow-through, and excellence) – that is exactly what we found in Classic Granite & Marble (CGM) in Midlothian, Virginia. We researched CGM’s reviews and certainly can attest to alignment with our personal experience. We initially went into CGM to select a granite top for our sewing machine base. However, we also knew, at some point in time, we wanted to remodel our kitchen. From the first time we walked into the showroom, we were greeted with a busy, but extremely friendly and professional receptionist, Donna. We had the pleasure of working with Kristi McGaugh, who was professional, very helpful, and thorough with our granite selection. Kristi was also resourceful in making a personal recommendation for another contractor, who also had excellent reviews, and we did actually remodel our kitchen feeling confident we had the right team working on our project. The staff CGM sent out (Joe to template the countertops; Scott, Arturo, and Jimmy to install the countertops; and Bubba, plumber) were all of the customer-focused qualities aforementioned. We are very pleased with our kitchen remodel project, and we would unreservedly, highly recommend CGM to a prospective customer."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, walls on the top floor can be load-bearing if stacked on the floor’s foundation.

Installing an ornamental or decorative porch column takes around three to five hours. Structural columns take longer because your pro has to install a jack to hold up the roof while switching the column out. If there's any structural damage, it can add several days to the timeline to repair the damage.

Framing is the shell of the house. It includes several steps, including studs, plumbing, and electricity. A professional will ensure the wall frame is secured for the house’s structural integrity.

Framing prices change depending on the material and whether the wall is load-bearing. Most contractors use wood to frame a home, but metal is another popular choice.

Yes, you will need a jack for a rim joist replacement. To prevent sagging and facilitate the removal of load-bearing wood, you’ll need to relieve the pressure from this joint before beginning work.

Due to hydraulics and other specialized equipment, a sill plate and rim joist replacement are not typically a DIY project. Hiring a professional structural engineer and experienced contractors is the best approach to replacing rotted sill plates and rim joists.

The cost to frame a 2,000-square-foot house can fall anywhere between $14,000 and $32,000. This price can increase or decrease depending on what type of framing you choose, the quality of the materials, the project's complexity, and whether you decide to hire a professional to do the job.
