Customers say: Quick response

"I had 3 ceiling fans installed in 3 separate rooms. Each one was switch operated, where the switch previously controlled a wall outlet. The work was done quickly, well within the estimated time. The price was estimated on the phone prior to the work being done. The install went well, the crew cleaned up after themselves very well. The only negative is that two of the three wall outlets are no longer grounded. I would hire them again, and am considering doing so for another project."

"Called Malone Electrical Solutions because I had a breaker that kept tripping. They came out, diagnosed the problem quickly, and got it fixed. No more issues since then. They explained what was wrong in a way that made sense and the price was reasonable. Good experience overall!"

For over 30 years, Root Electric Services has been serving the Northern Virginia area as a residential and commercial service electrician. The company is now in its second generation, being founded by Bill and Janice Root in 1986, and now growing under the direction of their son, Bill. Root employs a small number of professional, highly productive, and friendly electricians. \n\nRoot Electric sets itself apart from competitive companies by providing comprehensive, up-front pricing. That means Root Electric provides bids that include all of the components needed for each specific installation. In contrast, some contractors omit certain critical parts from the bid to win the job, then add them back in as a change order after the contract is signed and work has begun. Our customers appreciate that we tell then what they are buying, then deliver what we promised at the price that we quoted. \n\n

"Unfortunately, the electrician wasn't able to install the fan in the area that I had intended.  He did, however, offer to install it in another part of the attic for additional moneys, but I declined.  He was very understanding of this, too, which I appreciated.  Ultimately, I received a refund for this deal and had no work completed."

"We had a leak which damaged the ceiling and walls in two rooms. William returned our call promptly and provided a reasonable estimate. He was able to start right away. To sand and mud took 2 days' worth of work and painting the ceilings and rooms took 2 more. William and his crew showed up promptly and were never late. Roberto performed most of the work and he is very skilled. William showed up each day to check on the crew/work and update us on their status. William bought all the paint/supplies and performed all of the work with no deposit. The final bill was the same as his estimate--no hidden costs. We are very satisfied with the quality of the work, the reliability of the service and the price was very reasonable. We would use this service again!"

"The provider showed up on time and prepared.  There were some issues with the internal wiring of my house (1930s construction) that complicated installation.  He informed me of my two options -- one was to have the fan installed, but it could not be controlled by the wall switch, or the other was to rewire the wall switch and the wiring to the fan to allow the fan to be controlled by the wall switch -- at a substantial cost.  I liked that he was honest with my about my options rather than merely stating it would cost me extra to install the fan, given the age/condition of the wiring.

"Everything went very well. The movers were friendly and cordial and worked hard. They were careful to put things in the truck in the right order and got almost everything in in one go. With the help of my son the work was done in about 3 hours. Only once they were a bit overly enthusiastic and hit the ceiling with a cabinet they were carrying upstairs, but the damage was minimal. They removed hardware when needed and made sure things were put in the right places (I had labeled things with colored tape which helped). I would definitely recommend their service to my friends. It was a pleasure to work with them.

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

Fan power is measured by CFM, or cubic feet per minute. For every 1,000 feet of square footage in your attic, you need a minimum of 700 CFM. Steeper roofs may need larger fans or about 840 CFM.  You can figure the size of attic fan you need by multiplying the square footage of your attic floor by 0.7. (multiply by 1.2 for a steep roof and 1.15 for a dark roof). That number is the CFM required for your fan to run efficiently.

Many ceiling fan mounts feature a design that can accommodate slight slopes by using a ball joint mechanism at the end of the downrod. If your ceiling has a steeper slope than your fan allows for, you can install a downrod that will allow your fan to safely hang below the slope.

No, a ceiling fan doesn’t have to be wired to a switch, but it’s often more convenient. You can use the included pull chain if your ceiling isn’t too high or install a remote module later, as they are a cheap, easy-to-install option that’ll let you control both the fan and light fixture.

Whether you can install a ceiling fan yourself depends on if you're replacing an existing fixture or installing one where no wiring exists. If you are replacing an existing fan, an experienced DIYer may be able to do the job, which can save on labor costs. This work typically doesn’t require a permit, but there’s always a safety risk when dealing with electrical components, so hiring a pro is still a good idea, especially if you aren't handy. Keep in mind you may need a special ladder for high or vaulted ceilings. However, if you are installing a new ceiling fan where there is no current fixture, you must hire a licensed electrician. In most areas, it is required by law that a professional runs new wiring and pulls the necessary permits. Attempting to install wiring yourself can be dangerous and a code violation.

Ceiling fans require periodic cleaning of blades to avoid dust accumulation, checking screws and connections for firmness, and occasional lubrication for components, keeping the fan running smoothly and quietly over time.
